L.A. port strike, Day 7: Estimated to cost $1 billion per day

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Freighters with no place to unload their cargo lined up at anchorages off Los Angeles and Long Beach for a seventh day on Monday as shippers and striking clerks resumed talks to end a labor dispute that has idled most of America's biggest container port complex.

The two sides remained at loggerheads over the future of union representation for clerical jobs after individuals retire from those jobs, but the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 63 has so far resisted calls for outside mediation.

The 800-member clerical workers unit of the ILWU local walked off the job last Tuesday, with some 10,000 longshoremen and other union members refusing to cross picket lines, forcing a shutdown at 10 of the twin ports' 14 container terminals.

Four other container terminals remained open, along with facilities for handling shipments of automobiles, liquid fuels and break-bulk cargo such as raw steel.

The overall economic impact of the strike has been estimated to run at more than $1 billion a day, including lost wages of dock workers, truckers and others idled by the walkout, and the value of cargo rerouted by shippers.

The strike has prompted at least 11 freighters to take their cargo to other ports in northern California, Mexico and Panama, according to the nonprofit Maritime Exchange of Southern California, which tracks shipping traffic in the region.

Another 11 ships were waiting at anchorages outside the Los Angeles - Long Beach complex, unable to discharge their cargo, said Dick McKenna, executive director of the Maritime Exchange.

Although the strike began after the busy pre-holiday shipping season, the diversion of freight originally bound for Los Angeles and Long Beach has heightened growing concerns about southern California losing business to other ports.

"Shippers are a conservative bunch. If there is no reliability at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, they'll go someplace else," said Steve Getzug, a spokesman for the Harbor Employers Association, representing shippers and terminal operators in the labor talks.

UNION RESISTING CALLS FOR MEDIATION

Los Angeles Mayor Anthony Villaraigosa sent a letter to negotiators for both sides on Monday urging them to bring in a mediator to help resolve the dispute and to stay at the bargaining table around the clock until an agreement is reached.

The Harbor Trucking Association, representing 8,000 truck drivers, called on Monday for the Federal Maritime Commission to bring greater pressure to bear for a settlement.

The National Retail Federation and other U.S. business groups sent separate letters to President Barack Obama and leading members of Congress asking them to intervene, warning that a prolonged strike "would have a devastating impact on the U.S. economy."

Marathon negotiations over the weekend, capped by another exchange of proposals, failed to produce a breakthrough.

John Fageaux, head of the ILWU Local's clerical workers union, criticized management's negotiators for calling a break in the talks Saturday night, saying, "We were prepared to bargain all night."

"I'm really disappointed," he told Reuters. "I don't feel there's any urgency on the part of the employers to get this deal done." The striking clerks have been without a contract for more than two years.

Asked about suggestions for mediation, Fageaux said, "We haven't ruled that out, (but) I don't think at this point a mediator can really help."

Getzug, of the employers association, said they were "trying to move this thing along as quickly as possible," and said the companies would welcome a mediator.

"We've offered, as late as yesterday, generous wage and benefits packages and absolute job guarantees, and in exchange, we're making what we believe is a reasonable request to have flexibility in hiring new or temporary workers when there's no work for them to do."

ILWU leaders are demanding that jobs traditionally performed by their members remain classified as union work and subject to the union's contract terms, even after individuals holding them retire. They accuse the management of seeking to outsource union clerical jobs to overseas workers paid far less.

The employers insist on reserving the right to fill only those jobs that need to be filled, and they accuse the union of seeking to featherbed work that is unnecessary, even after jobs are lost through retirement.

The strike at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, the two busiest container ports in the nation, mark the largest disruption of cargo traffic through the two southern California facilities since a 10-day lockout at West Coast ports in 2002.

The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach together handled more than $400 billion in goods arriving or leaving the West Coast by ship last year.

The two ports directly or indirectly support roughly 1.2 million southern California jobs - workers involved in moving freight to or from the shipping complex, experts say. That does not count ancillary employment of people hired in restaurants, retail or other businesses that provide various services to those workers.

(AP) ? Nick Florence and other Baylor seniors have told Lache Seastrunk over the past few months to finish strong on his runs.

The sophomore running back took that advice to heart Saturday.

Seastrunk rushed for 178 yards, including diving in to complete a 76-yard touchdown run after cramping up, and Florence passed for 296 yards to lead Baylor past No. 24 Oklahoma State 41-34.

Oklahoma State had cut Baylor's lead to 34-27 when Seastrunk broke free up the middle on a play that looked similar to his 80-yard touchdown that sealed an upset win over Kansas State on Nov. 17.

Seastrunk raced past three Cowboys defenders before he began to pull up about 25 yards short of the end zone. After stumbling just past the goal line, Seastrunk remained on the ground for a couple of minutes before limping off the field.

Bears coach Art Briles said Seastrunk experienced leg cramps on his last carry of the game.

"We've been harping on him about finishing," Florence said. "For someone to cramp and pull up like that, that's inspiring. He's an outstanding player."

Baylor (7-5, 4-5 Big 12) has won at least seven games in three straight seasons - the first time the Bears have done that since 1949-51.

After Baylor lost at Oklahoma on Nov. 10, it didn't appear a third straight bowl game was in Baylor's future.

The Bears pulled off a 52-24 upset over Kansas State, which took over the No. 1 spot in the BCS rankings before traveling to Waco, and then rallied from an early two-touchdown deficit to win in overtime against Texas Tech.

Baylor finished off its regular season by beating Oklahoma State for only the second time in their last 17 meetings.

"The food is going to taste good for the next three weeks," Briles said. "The guys feel good about the way they finished the season."

J.W. Walsh rushed for two touchdowns and Josh Stewart had 147 yards receiving for Oklahoma State (7-5, 5-4), who was coming off a 51-48 overtime loss last weekend to Oklahoma in the Bedlam rivalry.

Clint Chelf threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to David Glidden to make it 41-34 with 1:16 left in the game.

Baylor recovered the ensuing onside kick and ran out the clock to secure its third straight victory. The Bears had lost six in a row to the Cowboys by an average of 31.7 points.

"In order to be a good football team like we've been the last few years here where we've won so many games, you have to be able to win on the road," Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said. "That comes with experience and maturity. We didn't really have that today."

Bears linebacker Eddie Lackey returned an interception for a touchdown in the first quarter to help Baylor jump out to a 21-point lead in the first half.

Florence threw a 75-yard touchdown pass to Tevin Reese and the senior quarterback also rushed for 71 yards and a score in the final home game of his career.

Florence has thrown for 4,121 yards this season and is 172 yards shy of breaking the school's single-season passing mark, which Robert Griffin III set last season.

"To be playing our best ball at the end of year is what you want to do," Florence said. "We want to carry on the streak and get to eight wins. We're hot right now and our goal is stay hot."

After sputtering offensively most of the second half, Oklahoma State drove 88 yards to make it 34-27 on Walsh's 4-yard touchdown run with 5:30 left in the game.

On the next play from scrimmage, Seastrunk broke loose for his 76-yard touchdown. As soon as he crossed the goal line, the Baylor crowd began chanting his name.

The Baylor medical staff rushed onto the field when Seastrunk stayed down on the ground. Seastrunk remained on the sideline the rest of the way after limping off the field, but he didn't return to the game.

"We gave up big plays because we were not in the right position," Oklahoma State senior linebacker Alex Elkins said. "They capitalized. It's going to happen."

The Bears took the lead for good early on Lackey's second interception return for a touchdown in two games.

The junior linebacker picked off a short pass in the flat and ran untouched for a 26-yard touchdown that gave Baylor a 10-3 lead with 7:58 remaining in the first quarter.

The Bears scored on their next two possessions to build a 24-3 lead. Glasco Martin powered in for a 2-yard touchdown run to cap a 16-play, 98-yard drive.

Florence then found Reese for a 75-yard touchdown pass. Reese caught the ball at the 40 and raced past three Oklahoma State defenders into the end zone.

The Cowboys got within 24-17 with consecutive touchdowns. Walsh had a 1-yard run and Chelf threw a 15-yard scoring pass to Stewart.

Chelf was 30 of 51 for 333 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Florence's 3-yard touchdown run made it 31-17 with 3:33 left in the first half.

Oklahoma State tight end Blake Jackson dropped two potential touchdown passes in the game. He had one on the Cowboys' first drive of the game and again early in the third quarter.

The Cowboys were able to kick field goals after the drops, including Quinn Sharp's 43-yarder in the third quarter that made it 31-20.

Belgium and Eurostat haggle over Dexia deal

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - European statistics agency Eurostat and Belgium are at odds over whether a 2.92 billion euro ($3.80 billion) capital injection into ailing financial group Dexia should count towards the country's current budget, a spokesman said on Saturday.

Belgium plans to classify the money pumped into Dexia as an investment rather than a cost, and in so doing stop it from inflating its budget deficit.

In an initial finding, Eurostat has informed Belgium that this was not possible.

"It is only a preliminary recommendation, the start of a procedure which gives us time to explain ourselves," a finance ministry spokesman said, adding that Eurostat did not have all the necessary information yet to come to a conclusion.

He added that Belgium had until December 12 to bring forward its point of view.

In November, Belgium's federal government agreed an extra 3.4 billion euros ($4.4 billion) of tax hikes and savings to cut its 2013 deficit to 2.15 percent of GDP from 2.8 percent this year. These are both below the deficit limit of 3 percent set by the European Union.

Belgium aims for a balanced budget in 2015.

France and Belgium jointly provided 5.5 billion euros of capital to Dexia, once the world's largest municipal lender, to take almost full control of the group in its third bailout since 2008.

The Dexia deal will add to the country's sovereign debt, which is already near 100 percent of annual economic output.

Educational Psychology for Organic Chemistry | Backlinkarticles

Even though courses in such subjects are difficult, there is one basic popular denominator amongst them ? mathematics. Vibrant students fair nicely mainly because they?ve been mastering the language of mathematics because initially grade.

Organic Chemistry is completely different. It calls for the mastering of an ?alien? language, which I normally compare to Russian, along with rapidly-paced deductive reasoning in that language. Visualize taking Russian for the very first time, studying for an exam, and understanding in class that the midterm is a test of deductive reasoning requiring thought in Russian. Sounds like it would in no way happen, yes? Properly, this is Natural Chemistry.

This program of logic based in visual-spatial learning with the intent of such finding out to be applications to unknown complications requiring quickly-paced deductive reasoning is taken by over 1 million students in the United States each year. It really is not atypical for a class average grade to hover between 30-50%. Particularly vivid students enroll in this course, and most of them obtain an common grade of 38%. This is an immense shock to students accustomed to scoring at the higher end of just about every other class they?ve taken.

Portion of the trouble is time management expertise never ever acquiring been developed, resulting in what I refer to as the ?Drama of the Alarms.? This is the series of ?emergencies? that arise when the first 3 weeks of the quarter/semester are spent ?coasting?. When the initial midterm arises, the student becomes critical and focuses exclusively upon the first midterm, ignoring every thing else. Just ahead of the 1st midterm, a further ?alarm? goes off, and the student realizes there is one more impending exam. As soon as exam a single is out of the way, the student ?crams? for exam two. Just ahead of exam two, the student ?learns? (the syllabus under no circumstances produced it to the calendar) of one other impending exam, takes exam two, and then crams for exam 3.

As soon as the vicious cycle of the Drama of the Alarms is in movement, it is like a runaway freight train having acquired far as well a lot momentum to cease. The drama continues until the end of the term, and fees the student one or additional A-grades. Rather of learning time management expertise, the student repeats the exact same pattern of behavior more than and again till graduation.

Key etiology of the ?concern? in Organic Chemistry particularly is the comfy habit of memorization put to use successfully to plan for examinations in practically each and every other topic. This method fails in Organic Chemistry. A different factor is the deceptively straightforward nature of Organic Chemistry wherein one may well search by notes, convince himself he knows the material only to understand days ahead of a midterm that he?s unable to function any of the problems effectively. The primary challenge is mastering, and becoming expected to promptly rationalize in, this extremely rigorous scientific visual-spatial language. There are no other university level courses like it, and Natural Chemistry routinely becomes a life-altering occasion.

The top teachers of Natural Chemistry are willing to do just about anything to get students to learn the topic. On one section of the blackboard, they create every thing needed for student mastery of program objectives. They indicate memorization will be their demise, and that the only successful strategy is to create abilities in vital analysis and deductive reasoning, the really abilities needed to excel in the MCAT. Exceptional teachers also take the time with each chapter of the textbook to apply principles discovered to real-life issues of interest to the students. Ultimately, these astounding Natural Chemistry teachers make themselves attainable for overview sessions either ahead of a midterm or even on a weekly basis.

As teachers of Natural Chemistry, we can?t adjust the nature of the program and nevertheless maintain its integrity. This will never come about ? it really is a option. We can, on the other hand, seek the tips of educational psychologists to find out how to get students to want to depart from the comfy habit of memorization toward that of deductive reasoning, figuring out the latter is what is expected on the MCAT. We can tell the students they have the decision of finding out MCAT abilities now with plenty of time to hone them, or they can get a C-grade in the program and hope that mastering MCAT abilities later could get them into some medical school.

Scare techniques are undesirable, having said that sadly they seem to operate greater than any strategy of good reinforcement. There are quite a few articles offered on how to succeed in Organic Chemistry. Some are read while most are not. What tiny is read is hardly ever rendered to practice. Finally, nearly endless sources are readily available to promote student accomplishment in Natural Chemistry, nonetheless most are seldom utilized.

Educational psychology is a science, and this teacher of Organic Chemistry is attractive to educational psychologists for a viral approach on how to effect permanent transform in the outcome of undergraduate Natural Chemistry. Such alter will necessitate addressing important time-management difficulties. Also expected will be introducing worth to students so they choose to do what is harder (deductive reasoning) vs. what is comfortable (memorization). Indicating such skills will become immensely beneficial on the MCAT appears like a logical approach, nevertheless the adversary right here is the tendency toward procrastination. How a lot of of us wait until April 10th to do our taxes?

This article is open ended. I am looking for the input of western educational psychologists, and am open to any recommendations that will empower students to pursue the research of Organic Chemistry with the intent of mastery rather than just obtaining a passing grade. The time for bringing educational psychology into the university classroom with regards to this topic is long overdue.

5 Ingredients Essential to Good Mentoring Relationship | Psych ...

By Janice Wood Associate News Editor
Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on December 1, 2012

5 Ingredients Essential to Good Mentoring RelationshipWhat goes into a successful relationship between a mentor and mentee?

According to new research, those being mentored should be open to feedback, be active listeners, be respectful of their mentor?s time ? including being on time and prepared for meetings ? and should follow at least some of their mentor?s advice.

?Successful mentorship is vital to career success and satisfaction for both mentors and mentees,? said Dr. Sharon Straus, a researcher at St. Michael?s Hospital and author of the paper published online in Academic Medicine.

Straus examined mentor-mentee relationships at two large academic health centers, the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine and the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine, where she is director of the Division of Geriatric Medicine. And while her focus was on teaching hospitals, she said she believes many of her findings could apply to other professions.

Her research identified five key ingredients necessary for a successful mentoring relationship: reciprocity, mutual respect, clear expectations, personal connections and shared values.

Failed relationships were characterized by poor communication, lack of commitment, personality differences, perceived or real competition, conflicts of interest and the mentor?s inexperience.

Faculty members interviewed for her study said mentees need to take their mentors? advice seriously. They don?t have to accept every word, but if they ignore most of the advice, it?s a fruitless relationship, she noted.

Good mentors were said to be honest, trustworthy and active listeners, meaning they were engaged with the mentee during each session, focused on the issues identified by the mentee and helped the mentee set goals.

The good ones also had a network of colleagues and collaborators who could open doors for their mentees, help jump-start their careers or just explain how the system works, Straus said. In addition to providing career advice, they also helped their mentees achieve work-life balance.

?One of the key challenges for mentors and mentees is a lack of time and participants stated that the effective mentors ensured that they remained accessible to their mentees even if they were located at a distance,? Straus said. ?Although they may not be able to meet in person regularly, effective mentors used email and phone contact to ensure accessibility.?

Good mentors also warned mentees of potential pitfalls, according to the researcher. One mentee described this role as being like a ?guardian angel [who] prevents you from hitting yourself when you know something is falling from the sky.?

Previous studies have found that effective mentorship produces university faculty who are more productive, are promoted more quickly and are more likely to stay at their institutions. Given the importance of mentoring, she recommends training programs focusing on promoting the characteristics of effective mentoring.

But what should you do if the mentoring relationship just isn?t working?

Straus said strategies include using a mentorship facilitator or the department chair as a mediator, as well as implementing a ?no-fault divorce? rule so either side can end the relationship.
