North Korea's special guests: First a Google executive, then Dennis Rodman

The fact that North Korea is getting to host well-known personalities from abroad is a PR plus for the regime, say analysts.

Before departing, Mr. Rodman told Pyongyang that leader Kim Jong-un, reported to have a great love for basketball, was ?really awesome? and that he and his father and grandfather were ?great leaders,? according to the Associated Press.

Rodman, who has long had a reputation for eccentricity and questionable behavior, was traveling with three members of the Harlem Globetrotters and a crew from Vice Media, which was shooting an episode for an HBO series and had plans for ?basketball diplomacy.?

The high profile visits come on the heels of Google executive Eric Schmidt?s tour to North Korea in January. And while they may look promising as they provide avenues for diplomacy that the US and the North have not seen before, in the short term it?s mostly just a public relations boon to Pyongyang at home, say analysts.

?Ultimately, they [North Korea] come out ahead because they can portray it as the world coming to pay tribute, or at least to be there,? says Aidan Foster-Carter, honorary senior research fellow in sociology and modern Korea at Leeds University in London.

Mr. Foster-Carter is quick to point out that these visits do not likely represent a substantial change in the nature of the North Korean state, which is accused of serious human rights abuses, and ignores international condemnation with its tests of nuclear devices and long-range rockets.??

?It?s not a sign of a broader change,? he says. ?If anything, it?s part of the process of the UN sanctions, showing that even though North Korea doesn?t care to talk to the US, high-profile Americans are willing to come to them.?

According to analysis of satellite images released this past week by the Committee for Human Rights in North Korea, one of the country?s main prison camps has expanded significantly over past several years, including the period since Kim Jong-un took over from his father, the late Kim Jong-il, after he passed away in late 2011.
?
The analysis found that Camp No. 25, in the difficult-to-access northeast of the country, has grown 72 percent since 2003 and now has a much larger number of guards.

North Korea is believed to have stepped up its security to prevent escape, both from prisons and across the border into China. Even as North Korea comes to allow more interesting characters in, there are still many who aren?t allowed out.?

Usually, unveiling a new generation of video game consoles is cause for celebration among gamers, who get a glimpse at the hardware that will drive evolution in the medium for years.

For many, however, the next wave of consoles has been too long in coming.

Historically, the three major console manufacturers -- Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony -- have released new hardware on a four- to six-year cycle. For the upcoming eighth console generation, Microsoft and Sony have delayed announcing their newest systems longer than normal.

Sony finally made its official announcement of the Playstation 4 at a press conference on Feb. 20. If the company stays on schedule for a holiday release, the Playstation 4 will arrive seven years after the Playstation 3, the longest delay between generations of consoles.

Microsoft is remaining tight-lipped about its plans and has yet to announce a follow up to the Xbox 360, which launched eight years ago this November.

Gamers say they are getting frustrated at the lack of news.

"I believe Microsoft waited too long," says Eric Williams, 29, of Chattanooga, an avid gamer on the Xbox 360 and previous generations of consoles. "They're being so secretive about releasing details about the hardware."

Wii U: just catching up?

So far, only Nintendo has maintained its traditional release schedule with the North American launch of the Wii U on Nov. 18, almost six years to the day after the original Wii hit shelves.

The Wii was the last system to release in the current, seventh generation of consoles, and the company has marketed the Wii U as the first of the upcoming eighth generation.

However, whether the Wii U constitutes a truly next-generation system is heavily debated within the industry. Although it marks Nintendo's first console capable of high-definition, 1080p graphics, the device's processing power is roughly equivalent to that of current generation systems such as the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

"That just puts it in the same league as the PS3 and 360, and barely, at that," says Joel Ruiz, 25, of Chattanooga.

In a call to investors earlier this year, John Riccitiello, CEO of software publisher EA, said that, despite its potential, the Wii U hardware couldn't match the power of Sony and Microsoft's in-development hardware.

"I wouldn't say that we see a correlation between the results that Nintendo has shown with .... the Wii U and what we see coming," Riccitiello said, according to a Feb. 4 article on Forbes.com. "In many ways, we would argue that what we're describing as [next-gen] is yet to come."

A similar argument was made after the launch of the original Wii, which many gamers saw as a casual gaming machine buoyed by a then-revolutionary motion controller rather than a true competitor to Microsoft and Sony's systems.

Despite technical specifications that fell short of its competitors, the Wii has outsold Microsoft and Sony with lifetime sales of 99 million units as of Dec. 31, according to company statistics. By comparison, the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 have sold 76 million and 77 million consoles, respectively.

Nevertheless, gamers expecting a noticeable leap from the next generation of consoles say the Wii U feels like more of a transitional device than the next step.

"The Wii U isn't doing anything we haven't seen before," says Rusty Lee, 29, of Chattanooga. "As much as I love Nintendo, the system and the games offered are hardly reason to shell out $300. I'll only buy it when [the next] 'Zelda' comes out. ... Until then, it's not even on my radar."

Tight lips

Speculation about Sony and Microsoft's next-generation consoles and their capabilities has run rampant since early in the life cycles of the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 .

In September 2008, less than two years after the Playstation 3's release, bloggers and analysts already were discussing rumors of Sony's next console, proposing a potential launch by 2010. The same year, writers were projecting a 2011 or 2012 launch of Microsoft's next console, even suggesting "Halo 4" (released Nov. 6) as a potential launch title.

In a Jan. 12, 2008, article, Dallas Morning News writer Victor Godinez suggested the next Xbox was just around the corner.

"One glance at a calendar suggests it won't be long before we start hearing all sorts of tidbits about the Xbox 720," Godinez wrote, citing the four-year span between the launch of the original Xbox and the Xbox 360.

"Repeating that four-year lifespan, the 720 ... should come out, um, let's see, next year!"

That was more than five years ago.

The next playstation

Less than a month before the official unveiling of Playstation 4, Sony President Kazuo Hirai suggested that Sony would wait for Microsoft to unveil its next console before it pulled back the curtain on its own next-gen hardware.

"Why go first, when your competitors can look at your specifications and come up with something better?" Hirai said in a Jan. 21 interview with the Times of London.

Instead, on Feb. 20, Sony broke radio silence by announcing the Playstation 4 at a special event in New York City.

During the event, Sony executives and engineers and a slew of developers demonstrated the system's capabilities, including social media sharing capabilities, its integration of cloud-based content streaming service Gaikai and a more personalized experience on the digital Playstation Store. The presentation also featured demo footage from several in-development titles, including new entries in the company's flagship "Killzone" and "inFAMOUS" franchises.

Lead system architect Mark Cerny said during his presentation that the Playstation 4 had been in development for five years. After waiting so long for information about a new console, however, some gamers say they were disappointed by what wasn't discussed at the event, which failed to show any actual hardware or designate a release date or price for the console.

To some, the conspicuous absence of even a prototype onstage at the announcement made the event feel rushed, an attempt by Sony to get word out early about its console ahead of Microsoft, which released the Xbox 360 about a year ahead of the Playstation 3.

And as good as the early titles look, they won't necessarily translate into rewarding final products, says Lorin Jones, 28, of St. Elmo.

"It seemed pretty apparent that Sony wanted to get the drop on Microsoft," Jones says. "Of course, the graphics are impressive, but that doesn't necessarily mean the games will be."

What about the next Xbox?

Like Sony, Microsoft has been quiet about its next-generation plans, but following the Playstation 4 unveiling, speculation online is that the Redmond, Wash.-based company could be announcing the Xbox's successor as early as April. Sources including Kotaku.com, a video game website, and NeoGAF, a respected Internet gaming forum, have pointed to a spring unveiling.

other questions

At least one lingering question at Sony's announcement was whether the console would continue to play used copies of games or, as rumor suggested, lock copies of games to a single console.

During a post-announcement roundtable discussion, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida told media outlets that the system would continue to support used games, adding, "That's the general expectation by consumers."

Microsoft has yet to address similar concerns about its presumed future console.

In the coming months, Yoshida said, Sony will share more details on the Playstation 4, including final hardware design, price and release date.

Japanese news outlet Asahi Shinbun predicted before the announcement that the new console would launch at $430, which some gamers say is at the ceiling of what they consider reasonable.

"I'd be willing to pay $399," says Eric Williams, 29, of Chattanooga. "If it's $500, I'd wait quite a bit until I can get a better deal."

By waiting so long to announce their newest consoles, some gamers and developers suggest Microsoft and Sony are facing a decidedly uphill battle in the next generation.

PC and Xbox 360 gamer Scott Gill, 24, of Chattanooga, says he doesn't feel rushed to upgrade to a next-generation system when currently available computer hardware already is more powerful than this generation's consoles.

"I would have to say I was underwhelmed [by the Playstation 4]," Gill says. "I still feel confined with a console, and I probably won't make a switch until upgrading and customizing [components] are integrated into these systems."

Yves Guillemot is the CEO of developer Ubisoft, makers of AAA franchises such as "Assassin's Creed" and "Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell." In a December interview, he suggested the release of a new generation will help revive the video game industry, which faced 11 straight months of flagging software and hardware sales industry-wide in 2012, according to statistics from industry tracking firm NPD.

Guillemot told gaming website Polygon that prolonging the current console cycle has led to a lack of innovation in gaming, and new consoles could be the magic bullet to reinvigorate developers.

"We need new consoles, and at the end of the cycle, generally the market goes down because there are less new ... properties, so that damaged the industry a little bit," he said.

Even if he shares the concerns of many other gamers about future gaming consoles, Ruiz says he'll probably hop on the next-gen bandwagon eventually.

"I'm excited about a PS4," he admits. "I'll talk bad about it all day, but I'll buy one."

U.S. to give Syrian rebels medical, food aid, not arms

ROME (Reuters) - The United States will send non-lethal aid directly to Syrian rebels for the first time, Secretary of State John Kerry said on Thursday, disappointing opponents of President Bashar al-Assad who are clamoring for Western weapons.

But in a change of emphasis, the mainly Western and Arab "Friends of Syria" group meeting in Rome "underlined the need to change the balance of power on the ground".

A final communique said participants would "coordinate their efforts closely so as to best empower the Syrian people and support the Supreme Military Command of the (rebel) Free Syrian Army in its efforts to help them exercise self-defense".

More than 70,000 Syrians have been killed in a fierce conflict that began with peaceful anti-Assad protests nearly two years ago. Some 860,000 have fled abroad and several million are displaced within the country or need humanitarian assistance.

Kerry, after the talks in Rome, said Washington would more than double its aid to the Syrian civilian opposition, giving it an extra $60 million to help provide food, sanitation and medical care to devastated communities.

The United States would now "extend food and medical supplies to the opposition, including to the Syrian opposition's Supreme Military (Council)", Kerry said.

In their communique, the "Friends of Syria" pledged more political and material support to the Syrian National Coalition, a fractious Cairo-based group that has struggled to gain traction inside Syria, especially among disparate rebel forces.

Riad Seif, a coalition leader, said before the Rome meeting that the opposition would demand "qualitative military support".

Another coalition official welcomed the result of the talks. "We move forward with a great deal of cautious optimism. We heard today a different kind of discourse," Yasser Tabbara said.

But the continued U.S. refusal to send weapons may compound the frustration that prompted the coalition to say last week it would shun the Rome talks. It attended only under U.S. pressure.

Many in the coalition say Western reluctance to arm rebels only plays into the hands of Islamist militants now widely seen as the most effective forces in the struggle to topple Assad.

However, a European diplomat held out the possibility of Western military support, saying the coalition and its Western and Arab backers would meet in Istanbul next week to discuss military and humanitarian support to the insurgents.

MEALS READY TO EAT

Kerry's offer of medical aid and Meals Ready to Eat (MREs), the U.S. army's basic ration, fell far short of rebel demands for sophisticated anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons to help turn the tables against Assad's mostly Russian-supplied forces.

It also stopped short of providing other forms of non-lethal assistance such as bullet-proof vests, armored personnel vehicles and military training to the insurgents.

Last week the European Union opened the way for direct aid to Syrian rebels, but did not lift an arms embargo on Syria.

The Rome talks again signaled the lack of appetite among the United States and its allies for direct military intervention in Syria, after the withdrawal of U.S.-led troops from Iraq and the drawdown under way in Afghanistan.

The communique called for an immediate halt to "unabated" arms supplies to Damascus by third countries, referring mostly to Assad's allies Russia and Iran.

It also said Syria must immediately stop indiscriminate bombardment of populated areas, which it described as crimes against humanity. NATO officials say Assad's military has fired ballistic missiles within Syria, which the government denies.

Human Rights Watch has reported that at least 171 civilians were killed in four Scud missile strikes last week.

The "Friends of Syria" pledged "more political and material support to the coalition as the sole legitimate representative of the Syrian people and to get more concrete assistance inside Syria", but gave no details on exactly what would be provided.

Kerry said earlier this week he would not leave the Syrian opposition "dangling in the wind", unsure of getting support.

But the White House continues to resist providing weaponry to the rebel forces, arguing there is no way to guarantee the arms might not fall into the hands of Islamist militants who might eventually use them against Western or Israeli targets.

"HUGE DEBATE"

U.S. officials have said that the U.S. Defense and State departments, under former Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, privately recommended that the White House arm the rebels, but were overruled.

"It's a huge debate inside the administration between those that have to deal with Syria on an everyday basis, the State Department and DoD (Defense) particularly, and the White House, which ... until now has vetoed any kind of outreach to the armed groups," said Andrew Tabler, senior fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, a think-tank.

The United States says it has already provided more than $50 million in non-lethal assistance such as communications gear and governance training to Syria's civilian opposition.

A source in the Syrian coalition, however, said even the extra $60 million promised by Washington was a pittance compared to what he said was the $40 million a day in humanitarian aid needed for Syrian refugees and internally displaced persons.

The United States has provided some $365 million in humanitarian aid for Syrian refugees in countries such as Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon and for internally displaced people, channeling this money through non-governmental organizations.

More than 40,000 people a week are fleeing Syria and the total number of refugees will likely pass 1 million in less than a month, far sooner than the United Nations had forecast, a senior U.N. official told the Security Council on Wednesday.

U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Ant?nio Guterres said his agency had registered 936,000 Syrians across the Middle East and North Africa, nearly 30 times as many as in April last year.

"We expected to have 1.1 million Syrian refugees by June. If things continue to accelerate like this, it will take less than a month to reach that number," he told the 15-member council.

First lady: We're a 'broccoli household'

What dishes would first lady Michelle Obama like to magically turn into guilt-free health foods? What?s her personal fitness regimen? What does she think of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg?s controversial restrictions on big sodas? And why are the Obamas ?a broccoli household??

The first lady answered those questions and more about fitness in an interview with Yahoo News, where she warned of a ?generational? battle against obesity.

Mobile users: tap here to watch the video of Olivier Knox's interview with Michelle Obama.

Michelle Obama was in her hometown of Chicago to unveil a new initiative to boost exercise in schools as part of her signature ?Let?s Move? campaign to get Americans off the couch.

?It?s starting with our kids. And this is an unprecedented collaboration to get kids more active through the school day,? she told Yahoo. ?A large percentage of schools do not have daily physical activity, a lot of schools have had to eliminate recess.?

As a result, kids who need ?at least 60 minutes? per day of active play are nowhere near that, the first lady said.

The new plan, promoted at LetsMoveSchools.org, aims to engage 50,000 schools over the next five years in collaboration with corporate partners like NIKE, which is making a $50 million investment in the effort.

When it comes to personal fitness and nutrition, the first lady leads by example.

?I exercise every single day for at least an hour a day ? but you don?t have to do that,? she said. ?I lift weights, I run, do the elliptical, I do push-ups I do sit-ups but I also sometimes do some boxing, and kick-boxing, I do some yoga.?

Obama said she gets ?bored? if she doesn?t vary her routine. ?I?m just like a kid, it?s got to be fun.?

What about vegetables?

?We are a big broccoli household. It is the one vegetable that my children will eat without creating chaos and havoc,? she said. ?There?s never quite clear harmony at the dinner table over the vegetables, but broccoli is a unifier in our household.?

Parents who want to get more involved in their kids? fitness should be ?making demands? on their schools to do more exercise ? but they shouldn?t hesitate to make working out at home a personal, even goofy affair.

?You don?t have to be an athlete,? she said. Get up and dance with your kids ?even if they?re embarrassed.?

Three years after the launch of Let's Move, is America winning the fight against obesity?

?We?re moving in the right direction, but the goal of Let?s Move is generational,? she said. ?We want your son, by the time he?s going into college, to really have a different health sort of perspective on life, that he knows that fruits and vegetables are a necessary part of life, so that a bag of chips and a diet Coke are not his breakfast.?

?We can?t measure things right now, but we have to keep plodding ahead,? she said. Obama cited support from high-profile firms like Walmart, Disney, and Nike but underlined that ?we need every restaurant, we need every grocery store, manufacturer, we need every food producer, we need every business to invest in some way in a school to get kids active.?

What about New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg?s restrictions on large-size sodas? Will it work?

?There is no one-size fits all solution to this problem,? she said. ?I think the mayor of New York is going to see how it works, and I think other cities can look on and see that as an option and figure out whether that?s something that works for them.?

She exercises daily, she eats her vegetables, she disapproves of reporters' vending-machine breakfasts ? but what foods would Michelle Obama like to magically turn into guilt-free health foods?

?There are many dishes that I would magically turn,? she said.

?If French fries were a healthy food, if macaroni and cheese ? macaroni and cheese can be a healthier food, but you know, the good old-fashioned creamy, cheesy, heavy macaroni, if that could be a healthy food, if pie could be a healthy food ? I could go on ? a hamburger and good juicy burger covered, smothered in cheese.?

?This is isn?t good, why are you doing this to me?? she said with a laugh.

There are a lot of factors why video marketing is becoming increasingly well-known here are some of these factors.

Purpose 1: Wide Coverage and Reach

With video marketing, you will be able to reach different men and women, young or old, male or female. Your advertising will reach millions of folks, regardless of their age, sex, and race.

Thousands of sites create interest from people worldwide. Individuals, particularly the younger generation, are cutting off on their other pursuits to give time to online social networks like MySpace and YouTube. YouTube alone has millions of viewers every day.

This opens a whole worldwide marketplace for every single business. It is no wonder why an estimated $400 million was spent for video advertising in 2006 alone. This figure is anticipated to increase in the coming years. With the majority of world wide web customers preferring to buy items online, much more and more movies are designed every single year in response.

Video messaging is a type of a personal communication to your target marketplace. You can produce all types of videos and send them by way of e-mail or post them on your sites. You can create video instant messages, emails or blogs. It depends on what type of video marketing and advertising would be most productive for you.

Reason three: Fairly Inexpensive

Online video marketing is not expensive. It is low-cost but it performs. It signifies very good company and much more profit. It is more affordable than print advertisements or Television ads. You spend little for the worldwide industry. You dont need to have millions of dollars just so you can launch an efficient and competitive video advertisement. This levels the playing area for property-based e-company owners like you. www

Practically all types of firms can develop their own on the internet video advertisements, upload these videos on YouTube, and embed the streams into their personal web sites. The Crazy Plan to Fly Two Humans to Mars in 2018

At the National Press Club in Washington today, businessman and private space traveler Dennis Tito officially announced his plans to fund a private, nonprofit effort to launch the first human mission to the Red Planet, called Inspiration Mars. To take advantage of an alignment of Earth and Mars that happens once every 15 years and would allow the shortest possible travel time possible between the planets, the mission seeks to launch on January 5, 2018. The crew would return to Earth on May 21, 2019.

Tito's spacecraft will be as stripped-down as possible. There will be no landing, and no need for a landing craft. Instead, the spacecraft will fly to within 100 miles of Mars to give humans the first close-up view of the planet without actually touching down. The crew would also be kept to a bare minimum for safety: just two astronauts.

The proposed mission would blast off for Mars on a free-return trajectory. This path would slingshot the craft past Mars and back to Earth with only minimal course corrections and no additional boost. Tito says the mission's major purpose would be to inspire the people of Earth the way that the moon landings did back in the late 1960s and early 1970s. This particular mission is an analogue to Apollo 8, which sent humans to the moon on a free-return flyby in 1968, one year before Armstrong and Aldrin touched down.

Even without a landing, the proposed Mars mission is a daunting proposition both from a technical and a financial point of view. Tito acknowledged that even with his deep pockets, he's going to have to raise a lot of cash. He refused to say exactly how much money he plans to commit. Who knows?" Tito said in response to PM's question on the matter. He simply promised to fund the project for the next two years.

As for total cost, Tito, indicated that it would cost "a factor of 100" less than the Apollo missions. That would put it at about $1 billion. "This is really chump change," Tito said.

Joining Tito at the announcement was Taber MacCallum, head of spacecraft-life-support-system developer Paragon Space Development Corporation and chief technical officer for Inspiration Mars; Jonathan Clark, a former NASA flight surgeon; and Jayne Poynter, president of Paragon. MacCallum and Poynter served on the crew of Biosphere II, a two-year experiment that kept eight people confined for two years in an enclosed habitat from 1991 to 1993. Poynter stressed the importance of sending a husband-and-wife team on the mission to Mars. Not only would the couple's relationship help them through the hardship of the mission, she said, but the pair would also serve as inspiration to young people of both sexes back home.

The team brushed aside concerns about the technical challenges of getting a manned spacecraft to and from Mars, focusing instead on what they called the greater challenge of keeping two humans not only alive but reasonably happy and functioning well for the 501-day duration of the mission.

Tito said he hired a team of experts to study the feasibility of the mission. The effort, he said, took three months, and the conclusion was positive. The results of the study will be presented in a paper at an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) conference on Sunday.

The paper, which is also available online, assumes a SpaceX Falcon Heavy as the launch vehicle and a SpaceX Dragon space capsule as the crew vehicle, though the team said at the conference that those elements were not set, and that they would consider any set of vehicles that were available by launch day.

The mission will also use an inflatable space habitat that would launch attached to the nose of the space capsule and expand to full-size living quarters for the crew once in space. Again, the team members wouldn't commit to a supplier for that structure, but they did mention Canadian company Thin Red Line as a possibility. That company has served a subcontractor to Bigelow Aerospace, which is currently under contract to attach an inflatable structure to the International Space Station.

Futron Corporation space analyst Jeff Foust tells PM he thinks the Inspiration Mars mission is doable?if only just barely. "The first, natural reaction is, that's impossible, you can't do that," he says. But, he says, after reading the study commissioned by Tito, he's concluded that it could conceivably succeed if everything goes just right.

In the mission's favor, Foust says, is that "there's no single point of failure here. If SpaceX stumbles, then you've got Boeing or Sierra Nevada with their vehicles," he says. "One of the lucky breaks is that it's happening right when there is this capability that wasn't available two years ago"?capabilities that could be mature by launch time in 2018.
