Help at hand when elderly relative's health fails

(AP) ? Marnie Schwartz was in California, a lawyer raising two toddlers. She was in no position to move across the country to care for her mother, who was living alone in New York and whose health was beginning to decline.

Schwartz's dilemma was similar to that faced by more and more Americans as the population spreads out, people live longer and giving up a job is out of the question.

"I needed eyes and ears closer to my mother," said Schwartz, an only child living in Malibu. "I needed someone to handle the medical, the insurance, the financial, stay on top of the daily caregiving, so the emotional strain wouldn't be overwhelming."

Those needs have fostered a niche that a variety of enterprises have been filling in recent years. Companies and individuals calling themselves advocates, care managers and advisers are willing to stand in for the family and deal with the maze of responsibilities that comes with the care of an elderly loved one.

With the aging of the baby boom generation, the 78 million Americans born between 1946 and 1964, calls for such businesses are expected to increase over the next 20 years.

Their service doesn't come cheap and it's generally not covered by insurance. But some customers have found it's worth the peace of mind.

Schwartz found her "eyes and ears" when a childhood friend told her about A Dignified Life, a small company in White Plains, N.Y., that specializes in elder care.

"I don't know what I would have done without them," Schwartz said. "They knew where to go with all these questions I had that would have taken me 500 phone calls. They deciphered what the doctors were saying. They got a ramp built at the house. They dealt with the plumber. They remembered everything, and they did it in a really human, caring way.

"In about a year and a half, as my mother's situation got worse, they became part of our daily life," Schwartz said. And in October, as her mother's health failed, "they told me it was time to get on a plane." She was at her mother's deathbed, she said, because A Dignified Life knew when to call.

Barbara Newman Mannix, who runs the company, said "experience and empathy" are required to do the job well. She vets, hires and monitors in-home caregivers, attorneys, nursing homes and more, guides a family through the financial tangles and makes sure an elderly person's wishes are respected. She can help arrange the sale of a house and pre-plan a funeral.

For an initial, $625 four-hour consultation, her company will evaluate a family's needs and come up with an "action plan." The family can then hire the company to implement the plan on an hourly or retainer basis.

Mannix started the company after navigating the maze during her husband's fatal illness.

"You're suddenly in crisis and the normal reaction is, 'What do I do, where do I go, who do I call first?'" she said. "People are lost. But we tell them there is a way to cope, there is crisis management, there are people that will help you who do what they do all day every day."

She said many people just don't have the personality for dealing with doctors and caregivers and insurance companies.

"It's time, it's energy, it's stress, it's consternation among members of the family," she said. "There's emotional baggage, and if you have children yourself you're being pulled in both directions."

Judy Rappaport, who runs Preferred Lifestyle Services in Jupiter, Fla., said most elderly people resist moving to a son or daughter's home.

"Everybody wants to stay home," Rappaport said. "Now we do what we can to make it possible for people to stay in their homes."

Most of her company's staffers are nurses.

"When we're hired, we go in and count the pills, check the food in the refrigerator, we talk to the doctors," she said. "We get a complete picture and we write up a report in lay language. The family knows what we'll do and what it will cost right up front."

The services can get very specific.

"We had one lady who wanted to play bingo and we said, 'No problem, we can get you to bingo.' But she was a German lady and she wanted to play bingo in German," Rappaport said. "We found a place."

Jullie Gray, incoming president of the National Association of Geriatric Care Managers, said membership is now near 2,000, up from fewer than 1,600 a decade ago.

Rappaport said the average fee for her clients is between $1,500 and $2,500 a month, not including the in-home caretakers' pay.

David Cutner, an elder law attorney in Manhattan, said he worries about elderly people exhausting their assets, but added, "People who have a substantial net worth and are not thinking about government benefit programs might well want to hire this type of service."

A much less comprehensive and less costly alternative is offered by CareFamily, which prescreens in-home caregivers and matches them to customers over the Internet. On Monday, the company announced a variety of online tools through which a family can remotely monitor a caregiver's attendance, provide reminders about medications and appointments and exchange care plans and notes via email, texting or phone.

The service would be included in the average $15 an hour fee paid for the caregiver, said CareFamily CEO Tom Knox. He said it can "cut costs while ensuring that the elderly can be well taken care of ? without the need to uproot seniors and disrupt families."

Yale Hauptman, an elder law attorney in Livingston, N.J., said many different services are available. His office is often called in by advocates who discover that an elderly person needs a will or power of attorney or a trust.

"We work with people who just do health insurance, cut through red tape, deal with Medicaid," he said. "We work with daily money managers, who make sure the bills get paid. We work with geriatric care managers on the medical side.

"The type of work these people do is absolutely essential. It's a combination of families living farther apart and the fact we're living longer."

Leslie Riley of Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y., said that when her sister-in-law began having mental and physical problems, relatives hired A Dignified Life, even though some lived nearby.

"We had no idea where to start," she said. "Barbara came in and helped us focus on what needed to be done. How to work with the doctors in the hospital. We needed to get power of attorney, we needed to provide health care proxies, we needed to figure out how to approach the financial situation."

"She had a checklist for everything," Riley said. "I would call her lovingly efficient."

Lieberman fears country may go over 'fiscal cliff'

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Senators bickered Sunday over who's to blame for lurching the country toward a year-end "fiscal cliff," bemoaning the lack of a deal days before the deadline but bridging no differences in the debate.

With the collapse Thursday of House Speaker John Boehner's plan to allow tax rates to rise on million-dollar-plus incomes, Sen. Joe Lieberman said "it's the first time that I feel it's more likely we'll go over the cliff than not," meaning that higher taxes for most Americans and painful federal agency budget cuts would be in line to go ahead.

"If we allow that to happen it will be the most colossal consequential act of congressional irresponsibility in a long time, maybe ever in American history because of the impact it'll have on almost every American," said Lieberman, a Connecticut independent.

Wyoming Sen. Jon Barrasso, a member of the GOP leadership, predicted that the new year would come without an agreement, and he faulted the White House.

"I believe the president is eager to go over the cliff for political purposes. He senses a victory at the bottom of the cliff," he said.

Democratic Sen. Kent Conrad of North Dakota, chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, was incredulous at Barrasso's assertion that 'there is only one person that can provide the leadership" on such a matter vital to the nation's interests.

"There are 535 of us that can provide leadership. There are 435 in the House, 100 in the Senate and there is the president, all of us have a responsibility here," he said. "And, you know what is happening? What is happening is the same old tired blame game. He said/she said. I think the American people are tired of it. What they want to hear is what is the solution?"

No solution seemed any nearer, with Obama and Congress on a short holiday break. Congress is expected to be back at work Thursday and Obama in the White House after a few days in Hawaii.

"It is time to get back to the table," said Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., "And I hope if anyone sees these representatives from the House in line shopping or getting their Christmas turkey, they wish them a merry Christmas, they're civil, and then say go back to the table, not your own table, the table in Washington."

Predicted Lieberman: "We're going to spend New Year's Eve here I believe."

Obama already has scaled back his ambitions for a sweeping budget bargain. Before leaving the capital on Friday, he called for a limited measure that extend George W. Bush-era tax cuts for most people and stave off federal spending cuts. The president also urged Congress to extend jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed that would otherwise be cut off for 2 million people at the end of the year.

"The truth of the matter is, if we do fall off the cliff after the president is inaugurated, he'll come back, propose just what he proposed ... in leaving Washington and we'll end up adopting it, but why should we put the markets in such turmoil and the people misunderstanding or lack of confidence," said Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga. "Why not go ahead and act now?

Obama's announcement late Friday suggested that a smaller deal may rest in the Senate, given the failure of Boehner's option in the House.

"The ball is now clearly with the Senate," said Lieberman.

He said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and GOP leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky "have the ability to put this together again and pass something. It won't be a big, grand bargain to take care of the total debt, but they can do some things that will avoid the worst consequences going over the fiscal cliff."

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison said she expects "it is going to be a patch because in four days we can't solve everything."

It was only a week ago when news emerged that Obama and Boehner had significantly narrowed their differences. Both were offering a cut in taxes for most Americans, an increase for a relative few and cuts of roughly $1 trillion in spending over a year. Also included was a scaling back of future cost-of-living increases for Social Security recipients ? a concession on the president's part as much as agreeing to higher tax rates was for the speaker.

Lieberman was on CNN's "State of the Union," while Barrasso and Conrad appeared on "Fox News Sunday." Klobuchar and Isakson were on "Fox News Sunday," while Hutchison was on CBS' "Face the Nation."

In 'fiscal cliff' fight, Obama gets better marks than Boehner

President Obama's approval rating is at a three-year high; Speaker Boehner's is at an all-time low, and a majority of Americans view the GOP as too extreme. Is Boehner's position in danger?

If you picture the ?fiscal cliff? struggle between the Democratic White House and the Republican House of Representatives as hand-to-hand political combat between the President and Speaker John Boehner, you?d have to score it as advantage Obama by a wide margin.

Mr. Obama?s approval rating is at a three-year high. Mr. Boehner?s is at an all-time low ? even lower than Nancy Pelosi, the former Speaker Boehner ousted when Republicans took over the House in 2010. Meanwhile, a majority of Americans now say the GOP is too extreme.

Depending on what happens with the automatic tax increases and across-the-board spending cuts that define the fiscal cliff just ten days off, that could change, of course. Public attitudes toward Washington are never very far from ?a pox on both your houses.?

But as the Obama family headed to Hawaii and lawmakers scattered for what?s likely to be a truncated holiday break, the latest polls are a lump of coal in the Republican Christmas stocking.

Fifty-three percent of those surveyed in a new CNN/ORC International poll say they view the policies of the GOP as too extreme, up 17 points from two years ago. Only 37 percent say they view the policies of the Democratic Party as too extreme.

?According to the survey, 53 percent say the GOP should compromise more, with 41 percent saying the Democratic Party should give up more of the proposals it supports to develop bipartisan solutions,? CNN reports

"That's due in part to the fact that the Republican brand is not doing all that well," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

This same survey shows just 34 percent feeling good about the job Boehner is doing ? 18 points lower than Obama?s job approval rating.

"Small wonder that nearly half say they have more confidence in President Obama than in the congressional Republicans and that nearly half (48 percent) would blame the GOP if the fiscal cliff occurs," says Mr. Holland.

(Thirty-seven percent said they would blame the president more, with 11 percent saying they would blame both sides equally if they don?t find a way to avoid the fiscal cliff.)

NRA Official Blames Hollywood for Sandy Hook School Shooting ...

NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre calls on Congress to pass a law putting armed guards in every American school during a press conference at the Willard Intercontinental Hotel in Washington, DC.

Chris Maddaloni/CQ Roll Call

December 21, 2012 3:05 PM ET

A top NRA official has pointed the blame at Hollywood and video games for gun violence in the wake of the Sandy Hook school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. Executive vice president Wayne LaPierre called for more guns, remarking, "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," and then went after the gaming industry.

"And here's another dirty little truth that the media try their best to conceal: There exists in this country a callous, corrupt and corrupting shadow industry that sells, and sows violence against its own people, through vicious, violent video games with names like Bulletstorm, Grand Theft Auto, Mortal Kombat and Splatterhouse," he said. "And here's one: It's called Kindergarten Killers. It's been online for 10 years. How come my research department could find it and all of yours either couldn't or didn't want anyone to know you had found it?"

Gun Control Now

LaPierre also turned his attention to film industry. "Then there's the blood-soaked slasher films like American Psycho and Natural Born Killers that are aired like propaganda loops on Splatterdays and every day a thousand music videos that portray life as a joke and murder as a way of life. And then they have the nerve to call it entertainment," he said. "But is that what it really is? Isn't fantasizing about killing people as a way to get your kicks really the filthiest form of pornography? In a race to the bottom, media conglomerates compete with one another to shock, violate and offend every standard of civilized society by bringing an ever-more-toxic mix of reckless behavior and criminal cruelty into our homes ? every minute of every day of every month of every year."

Chris Dodd, head of the Motion Picture Association of America, issued a statement in response. "I have reached out to the administration to express our support for the president's efforts in the wake of the Newtown tragedy," he said. "Those of us in the motion picture and television industry want to do our part to help America heal. We stand ready to be part of the national conversation."

Terrell Owens -- Another Day, Another Loss ... in Real Estate | TMZ ...

Terrell Owens
Another Day, Another Loss
... in Real Estate

EXCLUSIVE

1222_terrell_owens_launch
Desperate times call for desperate measures, especially for unemployed NFL star Terrell Owens -- who just unloaded his massive Georgia crib for waaaaaaaaaay under the asking price.

TMZ broke the story ... the wide receiver has been dropping real-estate left and right (thanks to his dwindling finances) and has already sold off condos in Dallas, Miami and Georgia.

The latest victim in his real-estate purge is a 7,694-square-foot-pad outside of Atlanta, which he bought way back in 2000 (i.e. when he had a job with the San Francisco 49ers).

T.O. first listed the house in 2010 for $1.5 million, but didn't actually sell it until now ... when he was willing to let the place go for a measly $694,000 ... a.k.a LESS than half what he wanted.

It's a great deal (for the buyer) who gets 6 bedrooms, 8 baths, a home theater, basketball court, gym, rec room, decks, and a huuuuuge resort style swimming pool.

The lesson here: BUY HOMES IN GEORGIA!!!!!

Sponsored Blog: The Perks of Online Dating | Seriously Maybe

If you?re single and looking for love, chances are you?ve heard the buzz around online dating. It?s without a doubt the most popular new way to meet new people, and across the country more and more happy couples are being formed on relationship sites.

But what exactly is it that sets online dating apart from traditional dating methods? Here?s a look at five of the perks the experience has to offer.

Seriously-Maybe_1

1. Convenient

One of the best cards online dating has to play is its sheer convenience. In our busy modern lives few of us have an abundance of spare time.

As winter sets in and the days get shorter and colder, the idea of getting home from work and getting dressed for a blind date becomes less and less appealing.

For single parents who juggle the demands of caring for little ones, the idea of sitting in bars late at night seems like little more than a distant memory. While for young professionals spending hours on the daily commute, finding the time to go on a dinner date can be nigh on impossible.

Whatever your situation, it?s easy to find excuses to avoid looking for love. Online dating is an easy and convenient alternative that lets you discover compatible singles, without disrupting your other priorities. You can check your matches in your lunch break, start an ice-breaker while cooking dinner and respond to your inbox message before you go to bed. It?s easy, fun and there?s no need to let life get in the way of finding love.

2. Affordable

In today?s tough economic times few of us have the money to be out wining and dining every night. Students, in particular, can struggle to scrape together funds for a gourmet meal, often to discover they didn?t share that much in common any way. There are plenty of excellent online dating sites that are free or offer free stages, meaning you can get to know people without spending a cent.

3. Effective

One of the biggest frustrations about looking for love is that it sometimes feels like little more than a guessing game. After all, what are the chances you?ll stumble across someone who shares your interests and values in a crowded bar?

Hollywood tells us that finding love is a matter of fate, but online dating relationships are about using science to increase the odds of meeting your ideal match.

With a relationship site such as http://www.eharmony.ca people are matched with like-minded singles who share their interests and values. This is called compatibility matching and it?s based on a scientific process that pairs people together based on their core values and attitudes. This means no more guessing games.

Seriously-Maybe_2

4. Flexible

Meeting new people can feel tricky in every location. Yet, whether you hail from a remote village in BC, the buzzing capital of Ottawa or a medium-sized city like Saskatoon, online dating can help overcome your challenges in finding love.

Always opt for a site that offers distance setting tools, allowing you to pick how close or far you?re willing to travel to look for love. Your perfect match might be waiting just around the corner, in the following town or a neighboring city.

5. Safe

Online dating allows you to meet new people and discover romance at a speed you find comfortable. Forget late nights or sleazy nightclubs, with the right relationship site you?ll discover a safe, welcoming and comfortable dating experience unlike any other.
