Golden Frog VyprVPN

VyprVPN from Golden Frog easily protects your online activity from digital snoops and hides your geographic location. Your computer and mobile devices communicate with Websites and other systems online by sending and receiving data packets. Anyone with a packet sniffer?your Internet Service Provider, the owner of the WiFi network you are using, or someone up to no good?could intercept that data stream and see what you are up to. Businesses rely on the Virtual Private Network to protect remote employees and their networks; a VPN service such as VyprVPN extends that protection to end-users. VyprVPN supports all major operating systems and provides users with varying degrees of protection.

When the VPN service is active, all the packets travel through a protected tunnel between the user's computer and Golden Frog servers. The servers handle all communications with the destination site, and responses are sent back to the PC through the same encrypted tunnel. Sites that try to identify you by your IP address see one of Golden Frog's IP addresses instead.

VyprVPN has servers in the U.S. (Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Austin, TX), Europe (London, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, and Paris), Canada (Toronto), and Asia (Hong Kong).

Pricing Plans
VyprVPN comes in two flavors, basic and Pro. Plain VyprVPN, at $14.99 a month, is available only for Windows and Mac OS X systems. It uses the PPTP protocol standard 128-bit encryption for its VPN connections. PPTP is widely deployed as it is built into most desktop and mobile operating systems, making it easy to set up. Since it uses basic encryption, it is the fastest among VyprVPN's options.

Users who want to use the VPN service on their iOS and Android devices must sign up for VyprVPN Pro, at $19.99 a month. The Pro version supports PPTP, OpenVPN SSL, and L2TP/IPSec. While PPTP uses 128-bit encryption, L2TP/IPSec uses 256-bit encryption and OpenVPN offers both 160-bit and 256-bit. L2TP/IPSec relies on the highest encryption so it has slower performance. OpenVPN, which relies on digital certificates, is reliable and performs very well. However, OpenVPN is not available for iOS.

Both Pro and basic versions offer users free 5GB online storage on Golden Frog's cloud storage service, Dump Truck. With Dump Truck, users can securely upload and share files with others. Unlike many of its competitors, Golden Frog does not offer free trial or ad-supported versions.

Getting Started
Users sign up for a Golden Frog account after buying either the basic or the pro version. An account confirmation email contains the link to the dashboard and to setup instructions. When I logged into the portal, I saw a well-laid out dashboard with information about VyprVPN on the left side of the screen and the Dump Truck cloud storage service on the right.

While you can use the VyprVPN credentials on multiple devices, only one device can be connected at a time. I can see if a device is currently using the service on this dashboard. Suppose you left your home PC connected and now you want to switch to your tablet. I can just log in to the dashboard and disconnect the PC. It would have been nice to be able to use devices simultaneously, the way Norton Hotspot Privacy does. At least VyprVPN sends a notification to the disconnected PC the connection has been dropped.

Users download the client applications for VyprVPN for Mac and for Windows from the dashboard, or for Pro users, click on links back to Google Play and iTunes for the Android and iOS apps. I can just use the client applications or follow the set up instructions to manually configure the VPN clients that came with my operating system. This means that as long as the device supports VPN, I should be able to configure it with VyprVPN credentials. If my router has DD-WRT firmware, I could just install VyprVPN and protect all users on the network in one step. I like this uncommon feature; I've seen it in only HideIPVPN and PrivateInternetAccess so far.

Installing the client application took only a few moments. Since VyprVPN also supports the OpenVPN protocol, the installer adds the TAP-WIN32 adapter, in the same way as competitors VPN Direct and HideIPVPN

Starting the software for the first time opens up a settings window where you enter the login credentials and select the connection settings, such as the geographic location of the server and the connection type. By default, the VPN settings are set to PPTP. There are also other settings, such as automatically reconnecting if the connection ever drops and automatically enabling the VPN service whenever the user connects to an unsecured wireless network.

The software is extremely lightweight, so it is easy to forget it is running. Like Private Internet Access, VyprVPN did not have an actual application window when I launched the program. All I got was a tiny lock icon in the system tray, and when I right-clicked on the icon, I saw a menu listing my current network settings and the option to go back into the Settings screen.

Golden Frog offers NAT Firewall as a separate add-on for $5 to block unrequested inbound traffic, such as bots scanning for open ports to exploit. Most wireless routers use Network Address Translation to share the single Internet connection across all connected devices, and when it receives unrequested inbound scans, it doesn't know which device it is for and blocks it automatically. Since VyprVPN bypasses the router and establishes a direct connection with the Golden Frog server, users aren't protected from malicious inbound traffic via the router's NAT. The NAT Firewall add-on protects users from these scans while connected to VyprVPN?Next: Using VyprVPN, Performance

Sex offenders disappear in wake of Sandy

NBC New York

U.S. Marshals search for a sex offender who is believed to have fled in the wake of Sandy.

NEW YORK -- Among the hundreds of people displaced from their homes after Sandy are sex offenders required to register with the government, and U.S. marshals are trying to find the ones who have disappeared.

Officials say the majority of displaced sex offenders have followed the rules and registered their new addresses. But some have not.

"It's critical because the people in the community are simply unaware that this individual is in their midst," Charlie Dunne, U.S. marshal for the Eastern District of New York, told NBC 4 New York.

Dunne said marshals work with state and local law enforcement to track down sex offenders after a natural disaster.

In the tri-state, marshals say dozens of sex offenders who changed addresses have had legitimate reasons for moving.

"Their houses had been damaged or they had gone into homeless shelters or hotels so obviously we're not going to prosecute those people," said Dunne.

More news from NBCNewYork.com

But there are some who are believed to be on the run after the hurricane.

For example, in Suffolk County, officials have examined 500 registered sex offenders in areas that could have been affected by the storm. Some 450 of them were living where they were supposed to be, leaving 50 that needed to be tracked further. Of those, 40 had relocated for reasons that checked out and five were picked up by the marshals, leaving about five that still hadn't been found, officials said.

"We're looking to prosecute the people that are taking advantage of the situation to proactively abscond thinking we won't be looking for them because we're too busy," Dunne said.

And for decades, the marshals have always been able to find people.

"You might as well be in compliance because we're gonna find you. We're gonna continue to look for you," Dunne said.

(AP) ? A longtime employee opened fire at a wood-processing company in central Switzerland on Wednesday, leaving three people dead, including the assailant, in the country's second multiple-fatality shooting in two months, police said.

Seven other people were wounded, six of them seriously, in the shooting at the premises of the company Kronospan, in the small town of Menznau, Lucerne criminal police chief Daniel Bussmann told reporters.

The incident occurred as the Swiss parliament prepares to consider tightening some aspects of the country's famously lax gun legislation.

The assailant, a 42-year-old Swiss male, arrived at the premises shortly after 9 a.m., drew a pistol and started firing. Police spokesman Kurt Graf said the shootings took place in the building's canteen area.

Officials didn't immediately have further details on the weapon or how the assailant acquired it. They also did not know how the assailant was killed.

"A lot of things are unclear at this stage," said Ida Glanzmann-Hunkeler, a Christian Democrat lawmaker who lives near the scene of the shooting.

Glanzmann-Hunkeler said a proposal will be put before parliament in the coming weeks that would require greater exchange of information between the gun registries kept by Switzerland's 26 cantons. Authorities would also record whether a person is considered mentally fit to own a gun, and increase officials' powers to confiscate weapons if they aren't.

But the shooting is unlikely to immediately revive calls for ex-soldiers to store their military-issued firearms in secure army depot. The country has a long-standing tradition for men to keep their military rifles after completing compulsory military service.

This partly accounts for the high rate of gun ownership in the country, where some 2.3 million firearms are owned by a population of about 8 million.

A referendum to tighten the laws was defeated at the ballot box in 2011. At the time, opponents pointed to Switzerland's relatively low rate of gun crime, with just 24 gun killings in 2009, which works out to a rate of about 0.3 per 100,000 inhabitants. The U.S. rate that year was about 11 times higher.

Still, there have been several high-profile incidents over the years, including the killing of 14 people at a city council meeting in Zug, not far from Lucerne, in 2001. And in early January, a 33-year-old man killed three women and wounded two men in a southern Swiss village.

Critics and advocates of gun rights doubted the latest shooting would lead to drastic law changes beyond the proposal now before parliament.

"If we demanded another referendum now, many people would say we already dealt with this two years ago," said Tobias Estermann, a member of the anti-weapons group Switzerland Without an Army.

Peter Schilliger, a Lucerne lawmaker, said the popularity of shooting clubs in Switzerland means there is strong grassroots support for gun ownership.

"And anyway, it will always be possible to come by a weapon somehow," he said.

Kronospan Chief Executive Mauro Capozzo said that the suspected assailant had been "with us for more than 10 years ? a quiet man, no other incidents involving him are known." Graf said the man was still with the company at the time of the shooting.

According to the local town council, Kronospan has some 450 employees. There was no immediate word on a possible motive; Capozzo said the company hasn't laid anyone off recently.

Shazam Is Driving $300 Million In iTunes And ... - Business Insider

It's a long time since Shazam was just that useful app to identify (or "tag") music playing in the real world. In 2013, the company has a burgeoning business based around people tagging TV shows and adverts too.

Shazam recently announced a major milestone: 300m users. That's all the people who've ever tagged something using the company's app. An impressive figure, but not one that reveals what Shazam's current active userbase is.

In an interview with The Guardian at Mobile World Congress, Shazam's executive vice president of marketing David Jones shared some more useful stats on that front, as well as on where Shazam is making its money in 2013.

Starting with the active users ? or audience, as Shazam's TV partners may see it. "We don't publish our monthly actives, but I can say that weekly actives are in the tens of millions, and monthly actives are many tens of millions," says Jones.

"20% of all iPhones in the US used Shazam last month, and in some European countries like France, Germany and the UK we're seeing closer to 30% or 40%. And we're currently adding at least 2m new users a week, and more than 3m some weeks."

It's this scale that's important to Shazam's expansion into the second-screen TV space, where apps designed to complement TV viewing like Zeebox and GetGlue are still counting their downloads in millions.

Shazam says its users are currently tagging 10m songs, shows and ads a day. They're also tapping through to buy the content they tag from download stores like iTunes and Amazon MP3 ? to the tune of a run-rate of $300m of sales a year. The vast majority is music, but TV shows, films and apps are a small but fast-growing percentage.

It's that second-screen TV business that holds the key to Shazam's future, though. Starting in the US, which accounts for 90m of those first 300m users of the company's app. Shazam creates content within its app for every programme on 160 American TV channels, serving it up when viewers tag the show.

Content? That's a mixture of episode descriptions, quizzes, tweets, cast information and playable clips of every song on the soundtrack, with links to buy song downloads, TV episodes and merchandise ? the latter through a partnership with e-commerce firm Delivery Agent.

For big events like the Super Bowl, Grammys and Oscars in the US ? and recently the Brit Awards in the UK ? Shazam builds what Jones calls "custom experiences", with polls, predictions, and video highlights for 2012's Olympic Games, with official US broadcaster NBC.

"We are going to roll out support for television programming in other countries," says Jones, although he declines to give an exact date. "The UK will be next, and then Western Europe."

The custom experiences side of Shazam's business has just been boosted by Fox Broadcasting Company's launch of an initiative called Fox Now, in partnership with a firm called Watchwith. The scheme involves providing second-screen apps companies with extra material to synchronise with shows as they air.

The idea: Fox will provide behind-the-scenes footage, interviews, interactive content and ads to a range of third-party apps. Shazam is one of four launch partners in the US, alongside Viggle, ConnecTV and NextGuide.

"We think this is going to be empowering," says Jones. "It's inclusive, fostering the development of the entire TV companion-app space, and it lets more people have access to this content. It's going to be good for creators and good for the network."

Fox's second-screen content won't be exclusive to Shazam, though. Jones is nevertheless bullish on the threats posed by these rivals and others including Zeebox and GetGlue.

"They're all struggling to get downloads. If they're getting a couple of million downloads, they're lucky. And while it's great that they're trying different things, they haven't nailed the experience: nothing has taken off," he says.

"But we've been at this a couple of years building custom experiences. We have millions of people Shazaming television every month in the US already."

How does that translate into money? Sponsorships and ad-tagging. In the former case: "We get six-figure sponsorships for single-night events, and some seven-figure sponsorships over a broader spread of time," says Jones.

In the latter case, brands pay Shazam to make their TV adverts interactive: they include a call-to-action in the ad to get people to tag it, and then Shazam provides second-screen content relating to their campaign.

The company has run more than 200 campaigns for over 140 brands, according to Jones. "The minimum price is $75k, but most cost between $75k and $200k for a campaign that runs for a couple of months," he says.

"So with 200 campaigns where we're getting paid low-six-figures on average, this is already a double-digit million business on its own. Shazam for TV advertising is going to become our primary revenue stream very quickly, and that's the way we're going to grow to being a multi-billion dollar company."

Or get bought, of course. Shazam's openness about its revenues and growth is clearly partly about drumming up interest from broadcasters and brands outside the US, but it won't hurt any long-term ambitions for the VC-backed company to find its exit.

In the meantime, Shazam is continuing to bulk up its salesforce, plot global expansion for its TV business, and steering clear of some of the pitfalls that lie in wait.

For example, Jones says Shazam won't get sucked into letting networks or advertisers target their rivals through its app ? for example, enabling Coca-Cola to pay Shazam to show its content when someone tries to tag a Pepsi ad.

The company isn't abandoning music ? it recently inked an exclusive deal with dance-music downloads store Beatport to bolster its database of electronic music, and has been building second-screen content for music videos by Ellie Goulding, Lil' Wayne and Mariah Carey / Justin Bieber, for example.

Shazam is also releasing a new version of its iPad and Android tablet apps, with an emphasis on discovery. People can see which shows and songs are being tagged most by Shazam's users around the world, and drill down by country, city and town through a map interface.

"The whole idea here is to build a better experience on your lap," says Jones, while showing off the new app, which will be released in the coming weeks. Shazam is hoping that beefing up its tablet experience will boost its longer-term ambitions to make second-screen advertising an even larger business.

"For the time being, second-screen is supporting the ads on the first screen, but there will come a time when second-screen revenues start to become significant enough that the television networks and advertising sales groups will really start to take notice," says Jones.

"While we're making a ton of money now, compared to the billions of advertising that the networks sell, it's a smaller thing. That's the opportunity."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Rosa Parks is famous for her 1955 refusal to give up her seat on a city bus in Alabama to a white man, but there's plenty about the rest of her experiences that she deliberately withheld from her family.

While Parks and her husband, Raymond, were childless, her brother, the late Sylvester McCauley, had 13 children. They decided Parks' nieces and nephews didn't need to know the horrible details surrounding her civil rights activism, said Rhea McCauley, Parks' niece.

"They didn't talk about the lynchings and the Jim Crow laws," said McCauley, 61, of Orlando, Fla. "They didn't talk about that stuff to us kids. Everyone wanted to forget about it and sweep it under the rug."

Parks' descendants now have a chance to be first-hand witnesses as their late matriarch makes more history, this time becoming the first black woman to be honored with a full-length statue in the Capitol's Statuary Hall. The statue of Parks joins a bust of another black woman, abolitionist Sojourner Truth, which sits in the Capitol Visitors Center.

President Barack Obama, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker John Boehner are among the dignitaries taking part in the unveiling Wednesday. McCauley said more than 50 of Parks' relatives traveled to Washington for the ceremony.

In a pivotal moment in the civil rights movement, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a city bus in segregated Montgomery, Ala. She was arrested, touching off a bus boycott that stretched over a year.

Jeanne Theoharis, author of the new biography "The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks," said Parks was very much a full-fledged civil rights activist, yet her contributions have not been treated like those of other movement leaders, such as the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

"Rosa Parks is typically honored as a woman of courage, but that honor focuses on the one act she made on the bus on Dec. 5, 1955," said Theoharis, a political science professor at Brooklyn College-City University of New York.

"That courage, that night was the product of decades of political work before that and continued ... decades after" in Detroit, she said.

Parks died Oct. 24, 2005, at age 92. The U.S. Postal Service issued a stamp in her honor on Feb. 4, which would have been her 100th birthday.

Parks was raised by her mother and grandparents who taught her that part of being respected was to demand respect, said Theoharis, who spent six years researching and writing the Parks biography.

She was an educated woman who recalled seeing her grandfather sitting on the porch steps with a gun during the height of white violence against blacks in post-World War I Alabama.

After she married Raymond Parks, she joined him in his work in trying to help nine young black men, ages 12 to 19, who were accused of raping two white women in 1931. The nine were later convicted by an all-white jury in Scottsboro, Ala., part of a long legal odyssey for the so-called Scottsboro Boys.

In the 1940s, Parks joined the NAACP and was elected secretary of its Montgomery, Ala., branch, working with civil rights activist Edgar Nixon to fight barriers to voting for blacks and investigate sexual violence against women, Theoharis said.

Just five months before refusing to give up her seat, Parks attended Highlander Folk School, which trained community organizers on issues of poverty but had begun turning its attention to civil rights.

After the bus boycott, Parks and her husband lost their jobs and were threatened. They left for Detroit, where Parks was an activist against the war in Vietnam and worked on poverty, housing and racial justice issues, Theoharis said.

Theoharis said that while she considers the 9-foot-statue of Parks in the Capitol an "incredible honor" for Parks, "I worry about putting this history in the past when the actual Rosa Parks was working on and calling on us to continue to work on racial injustice."

Parks has been honored previously in Washington with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1996 and the Congressional Gold Medal in 1999, both during the Clinton administration.

But McCauley said the Statuary Hall honor is different.

"The medal you could take it, put it on a mantel," McCauley said. "But her being in the hall itself is permanent and children will be able to tour the (Capitol) and look up and see my aunt's face."

C. Everett Koop, Reagan's revolutionary surgeon general, dies

When C. Everett Koop finished his 8-year term as surgeon general in 1989, he left behind a landscape where AIDS was a top research and educational priority, smoking was considered a public health hazard, and access to abortion remained largely intact.

Former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. C. Everett Koop, seen here in 2002, raised the profile of the surgeon general by riveting America's attention on the then-emerging disease known as AIDS and by railing against smoking. He has died in New Hampshire at age 96. (AP Photo/Jim Cole, File)

With his striking beard and starched uniform, former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop became one of the most recognizable figures of the Reagan era ? and one of the most unexpectedly enduring.

His nomination in 1981 met a wall of opposition from women's groups and liberal politicians, who complained President Ronald Reagan selected Koop, a pediatric surgeon and evangelical Christian from Philadelphia, only because of his conservative views, especially his staunch opposition to abortion.

Soon, though, he was a hero to AIDS activists, who chanted "Koop, Koop" at his appearances but booed other officials. And when he left his post in 1989, he left behind a landscape where AIDS was a top research and educational priority, smoking was considered a public health hazard, and access to abortion remained largely intact.

Koop, who turned his once-obscure post into a bully pulpit for seven years during the Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations and who surprised both ends of the political spectrum by setting aside his conservative personal views on issues such as homosexuality and abortion to keep his focus sharply medical, died Monday at his home in Hanover, N.H. He was 96.

An assistant at Koop's Dartmouth College institute, Susan Wills, confirmed his death but didn't disclose its cause.

Dr. Richard Carmona, who served as surgeon general a decade ago under President George W. Bush, said Koop was a mentor to him and preached the importance of staying true to the science even if it made politicians uncomfortable.

"He set the bar high for all who followed in his footsteps," Carmona said.

Although the surgeon general has no real authority to set government policy, Koop described himself as "the health conscience of the country" and said modestly just before leaving his post that "my only influence was through moral suasion."

A former pipe smoker, Koop carried out a crusade to end smoking in the United States; his goal had been to do so by 2000. He said cigarettes were as addictive as heroin and cocaine. And he shocked his conservative supporters when he endorsed condoms and sex education to stop the spread of AIDS.

Chris Collins, a vice president of amFAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research, said many people don't realize what an important role Koop played in the beginning of the AIDS epidemic.

"At the time, he really changed the national conversation, and he showed real courage in pursuing the duties of his job," Collins said.

Even after leaving office, Koop continued to promote public health causes, from preventing childhood accidents to better training for doctors.

"I will use the written word, the spoken word and whatever I can in the electronic media to deliver health messages to this country as long as people will listen," he promised.

In 1996, he rapped Republican presidential hopeful Bob Dole for suggesting that tobacco was not invariably addictive, saying Dole's comments "either exposed his abysmal lack of knowledge of nicotine addiction or his blind support of the tobacco industry."

Although Koop eventually won wide respect with his blend of old-fashioned values, pragmatism and empathy, his nomination met staunch opposition.

Foes noted that Koop traveled the country in 1979 and 1980 giving speeches that predicted a progression "from liberalized abortion to infanticide to passive euthanasia to active euthanasia, indeed to the very beginnings of the political climate that led to Auschwitz, Dachau and Belsen."

But Koop, a devout Presbyterian, was confirmed after he told a Senate panel he would not use the surgeon general's post to promote his religious ideology. He kept his word.

Holiday Like A Rock Star

When we dream of living the high life, we tend to dream big. And more often than not, the dream, for many of us, is to live like a rock star. Not a musician a rock star. Because (and this is something we acknowledge from childhood, when our great big dreams start to form), the key difference between the two career paths is the lifestyle. In essence, the musician will often be found carting their own gear in and out of venues, busking on the street and trying to make a break, while the rock star will be living up a lavish life with luxury surroundings and tonnes of adoring fans. Let's face it; everyone wants to live it up like a rock star. Think about it the fancy hotels, plush room service, flashy cocktails and worldwide travel... being able to write a good lyric has little to do with it, at the end of the day. And this, of course, is good news because it means anyone can have a taste of the rock star lifestyle! Just book your holidays wisely, be prepared to splash out and spoil yourself, and enjoy the comforts of superstardom...

To really get a taste of the rock and roll dream, your best bet is to take a trip to the United States of America, where rock n' roll was born, back in the heyday of the 1940s and 50s. This is the country of Elvis and Little Richard, Aerosmith and Kings of Leon. The land of the extravagant, the extreme, and the super-sized. To really get the show on the road, head to Orlando for a night or two to live out your dreams of rock stardom with all the mod cons, room service at your beck and call, and of course, hanging out by the pool with your entourage.

Frankly, theme parks and rock n' roll go hand in hand (just ask the Red Hot Chili Peppers who wrote the song Love Rollercoaster) this is where thrills, excitement and fun are the main draw, and if you're looking for a place that merges the two on one site, you want Disneyland. Here, right at the end of the park's Sunset Boulevard, you'll find the super-fast Rock n' Roller coaster, in which riders will follow the rock band Aerosmith (who rewrote their biggest hits for the ride's soundtrack the rock and roll seal of approval) through fictional recording studio sessions, limo rides, and then on to a live gig. The rollercoaster goes from 0 to 57 miles per hour in just 2.8 seconds that's sure to give you the thrill of life in the fast lane.

Certainly, life doesn't get much crazier than in Las Vegas, where the stakes are high and the hotels higher, with some of the world's biggest hotels and casinos located here on The Strip. Many a rocker has let loose on the City of Sin over the years, rolling dice in the casino, playing gigs, or simply having a blow out at one of the huge resorts. Some big name bands even hail from the Nevada city, such as The Killers, proof that Las Vegas is not only a great party spot for the rock and roll lifestyle, but it can also spawn some of the industry's biggest acts. Hotels here allow you to experience luxurious accommodation with king-sized beds, sprawling flat-screen televisions and oversized showers. Enjoy more space than you'd ever really need, without even leaving your hotel room.

If you're more of a laid-back rocker or a chilled-out roller, than perhaps the Big Apple is more your bag. Living the life of a superstar doesn't necessarily mean being in the spotlight - subtle opulence might be more your thing, in which case New York is the place to go. As the song goes, if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere. After all, living the rock and roll dream is not about the music it's all about the lifestyle, baby!

Dennis Rodman worms his way into North Korea

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) ? Former NBA star Dennis Rodman brought his basketball skills and flamboyant style ? tattoos, nose studs and all ? on Tuesday to a country with possibly the world's strictest dress code: North Korea.

Arriving in Pyongyang, the American athlete and showman known as "The Worm" became an unlikely ambassador for sports diplomacy at a time of heightened tensions between the U.S. and North Korea. Or maybe not so unlikely: Young leader Kim Jong Un is said to have been a fan of the Chicago Bulls in the 1990s, when Rodman won three championships with the club.

Rodman is joining three members of the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team and a VICE correspondent for a news show on North Korea that will air on HBO later this year, VICE producers told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview Tuesday before they landed.

"It's my first time, I think it's most of these guys' first time here, so hopefully everything's going to be OK , and hoping the kids have a good time for the game," Rodman told reporters after arriving in Pyongyang.

Rodman and VICE's producers said the Americans hope to engage in a little "basketball diplomacy" by running a basketball camp for children and playing with North Korea's top basketball stars.

"Is sending the Harlem Globetrotters and Dennis Rodman to the DPRK strange? In a word, yes," said Shane Smith, the VICE founder who is host of the upcoming series, referring to North Korea by the initials of its formal name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. "But finding common ground on the basketball court is a beautiful thing."

The notoriously unpredictable and irrepressible Rodman might seem an odd fit for regimented North Korea, where men's fashion rarely ventures beyond military khaki and where growing facial hair is forbidden.

Shown a photo of a snarling Rodman, piercings dangling from his lower lip and two massive tattoos emblazoned on his chest, one North Korean in Pyongyang recoiled and said: "He looks like a monster!"

But Rodman is also a Hall of Fame basketball player and one of the best defenders and rebounders to ever play the game. During a storied, often controversial career, he won five NBA championships ? a feat appreciated even in North Korea.

Rodman, now 51, was low-key and soft-spoken Tuesday in cobalt blue sweatpants and a Polo Ralph Lauren cap. There was a bit of flash: white-rimmed sunglasses and studs in his nose and lower lip. But he told AP he was there to teach basketball and talk to people, not to stir up trouble.

Showier were three Harlem Globetrotters dressed in fire-engine red. Rookie Moose Weekes flashed the crowd a huge smile as he made his way off the Air Koryo plane.

"We use the basketball as a tool to build cultural ties, build bridges among countries," said Buckets Blakes, a Globetrotters veteran. "We're all about happiness and joy and making people smile."

Rodman's trip is the second high-profile American visit this year to North Korea, a country that remains in a state of war with the U.S. It also comes two weeks after North Korea conducted an underground nuclear test in defiance of U.N. bans against atomic and missile activity.

Google's executive chairman, Eric Schmidt, made a surprise four-day trip in January to Pyongyang, where he met with officials and toured computer labs, just weeks after North Korea launched a satellite into space on the back of a long-range rocket.

Washington, Tokyo, Seoul and others consider both the rocket launch and the nuclear test provocative acts that threaten regional security.

North Korea characterizes the satellite launch as a peaceful bid to explore space, but says the nuclear test was meant as a deliberate warning to Washington. Pyongyang says it needs to build nuclear weapons to defend itself against the U.S., and is believed to be trying to build an atomic bomb small enough to mount on a missile capable of reaching the mainland U.S.

VICE, known for its sometimes irreverent journalism, has made two previous visits to North Korea, coming out with the "VICE Guide to North Korea." The HBO series, which will air weekly starting April 5, features documentary-style news reports from around the world.

The Americans also will visit North Korea's national monuments, the SEK animation studio and a new skate park in Pyongyang.

The U.S. State Department hasn't been contacted about travel to North Korea by this group, a senior administration official said, requesting anonymity to comment before any trip had been made public. The official said the department does not vet U.S. citizens' private travel to North Korea and urges U.S. citizens contemplating travel there to review a travel warning on its website.

In a now-defunct U.S.-North Korean agreement in which Washington had planned last year to give food aid to Pyongyang in exchange for nuclear concessions, Washington had said it was prepared to increase people-to-people exchanges with the North, including in the areas of culture, education and sports.

Promoting technology and sports are two major policy priorities of Kim Jong Un, who took power in December 2011 following the death of his father, Kim Jong Il.

Along with soccer, basketball is enormously popular in North Korea, where it's not uncommon to see basketball hoops set up in hotel parking lots or in schoolyards. It's a game that doesn't require much equipment or upkeep.

The U.S. remains Enemy No. 1 in North Korea, and North Koreans have limited exposure to American pop culture. But they know Michael Jordan, a former teammate of Rodman's when they both played for the Chicago Bulls in the 1990s.

During a historic visit to North Korea in 2000, then-U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright presented Kim Jong Il, famously an NBA fan, with a basketball signed by Jordan that later went on display in the huge cave at Mount Myohyang that holds gifts to the leaders.

North Korea even had its own Jordan wannabe: Ri Myong Hun, a 7-foot-9 star player who is said to have renamed himself "Michael" after his favorite player and moved to Canada for a few years in the 1990s in hopes of making it into the NBA.

Even today, Jordan remains well-loved here. At the Mansudae Art Studio, which produces the country's top art, a portrait of Jordan spotted last week, complete with a replica of his signature and "NBA" painted in one corner, seemed an odd inclusion among the propaganda posters and celadon vases on display.

An informal poll of North Koreans revealed that "The Worm" isn't quite as much a household name in Pyongyang.

But Kim Jong Un was a basketball-crazy adolescent when Rodman was with the Bulls, and when the Harlem Globetrotters kept up a frenetic travel schedule worldwide.

In a memoir about his decade serving as Kim Jong Il's personal sushi chef, a man who goes by the pen name Kenji Fujimoto recalled that basketball was the young Kim Jong Un's biggest passion, and that the Chicago Bulls were his favorite.

Soccer-West Ham pay tribute to England hero Moore

LONDON, Feb 25 (Reuters) - Bobby Moore's grand-children led the teams out before West Ham United played Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League at Upton Park on Monday as his former club marked the 20th anniversary of his death.

Poppy, 21, Freddie, 16, and 13-year-old Ava placed the ball on the spot for the kickoff at Upton Park and fans of both clubs provided an impeccably-observed minute's applause for England's 1966 World Cup-winning captain who died of cancer aged 51 on Feb. 24, 1993.

West Ham fans also held aloft cards making up a mosaic reading "Moore 6".

Moore's family, club officials and supporters gathered to pay tribute on Sunday with Moore's former West Ham and World Cup-winning team-mate Martin Peters and club co-chairman David Gold attending a wreath-laying ceremony at the World Cup "Champions" statue near West Ham's ground.

"He was our England World Cup-winning captain, but also more personally for all of us here at West Ham, a legend at our club and always will be," Gold said.

"It was great to see so many West Ham fans turn out in what was bitterly cold weather. But they wanted to pay their respects to a man we hold very dear at this club."

Moore played 646 times for West Ham between 1958 and 1974, leading them to victory in the 1964 FA Cup final and 1965 European Cup Winners' Cup final.

What?s?next

Barnes & Noble said the offer will be considered by a committee of three independent directors. But there is no set timetable for the?process.

NEW YORK ? The last remaining national bookstore chain is being taken off the shelf and dusted off for?sale.

Barnes & Noble?s founder Leonard Riggio disclosed in a regulatory filing Monday that he wants to acquire the company?s stores and website, but not the business that makes the Nook e-reader or the company?s college bookstores. No price was?disclosed.

It?s the latest attempt by a company founder to take back control of all or part of a company he started. Best Buy?s co-founder Richard Schulze is mulling a bid for the electronics retailer, and Michael Dell earlier this month announced a $24.4 billion deal to take the namesake computer company he founded?private.

The deals are a way for executives to exert more control over companies without the need to run everything by shareholders. In all of these cases, the founders have devoted decades to the businesses, and the companies are struggling to survive in a changing retail?landscape.

?When you?ve got control outside public eye or public market, you can invest and translate your strategy at your own pace,? said Peter Wahlstrom, analyst at Morningstar. ?It?s him believing he can run it better by himself without the distraction of the digital side. He believes the brand has value that?s not being recognized by?investors.?

Barnes & Noble, based in New York, has been struggling to find its place as more readers have shifted to electronic books and competition has grown from discount stores and online competitors. The company, which has 689 bookstores in 50 states and 674 college bookstores, has been trying to avoid the fate of its former rival Borders Group, which did not adapt to the growing threat of the Internet and e-books and went out of business in?2011.

Technically, Riggio, who is chairman of the chain, didn?t found the original Barnes & Noble store in New York when it opened in 1917. But he bought the store and brand name in the 1970s. Under his leadership, Barnes & Noble became one of the pioneers of the ?big box? format in which national chains would set up large stores that offer a wide selection of merchandise under one?roof.

The company also pioneered bookselling in general. In 1975 it began offering 40 percent off New York Times best sellers, which was then unheard of in the bookselling?business.

Throughout the 1980s, the company expanded through acquisitions. It bought B Dalton Bookseller in 1987 and BookStop in 1989. Then it went public in 1993 and established its website in?1997.

But the company was hurt by Internet retailers like Amazon.com and discounters such as Wal-Mart and Costco expanding their book selections. Barnes & Noble has been proactive, investing heavily in its Nook e-book readers and a digital library. It struck a deal with Microsoft last April to create a Nook subsidiary. But the Nook faces competition from other devices like Apple?s iPad Mini, Amazon?s Kindle and Google?s Nexus tablet. And the unit is far from profitable. Earlier this month, the company said it expects Nook media revenue of less than $3 billion in fiscal 2013. It also anticipates a loss for the unit before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization to exceed the $262 million loss recorded in its 2012 fiscal?year.

This follows a report from the retailer in January that its Nook unit revenue fell 12.6 percent to $311 million during the critical holiday period. Overall sales during the holiday period fell 10.9 percent at bookstores and online compared with a year ago. Barnes & Noble is scheduled to report third-quarter results?Thursday.

Barnes & Noble bookstores, though, have been profitable even though they?re facing falling sales. The company has broadened its offerings in stores and sells more high-margin games, educational toys and other nonbook items to improve?results.

In its fiscal second recent quarter ended Oct. 27, earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization in the retail segment ? which includes the stores and the website that Riggio wants to buy ? doubled to $28 million, helped by selling higher-margin products. Revenue from that segment fell 3 percent to $996 million. Overall, the company?s net income totaled $2.2 million, up from a prior-year loss of $6.6 million. Revenue was nearly flat at $1.88?billion.

Monday?s filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission said that Riggio, who is Barnes & Noble?s largest shareholder with nearly 30 percent of the company?s shares, will seek to negotiate a price with the company?s board and pay for the deal with cash and debt. Riggio is making the offer in order to facilitate the company?s review of its strategic options for separating its Nook business, according to the?filing.

Money: Profiles of Top Internet Business Concepts

Profiles of Top Internet Business Concepts

1. Ad Network
OVERVIEW OF BUSINESS MODEL
Ad networks are among the top methods of online advertising. The ?network?
component is organizing the sale of ads and finding high-traffic sites on which
to place the banner ads or hyperlinks for your clients. Ad networks are just like
other ad agencies. They research Web sites that attract the target demographic
of their clients. The revenue comes from the percentage of advertising dollars
that you retain during each campaign.
SKILLS NEEDED
Knowledge of online advertising techniques is an asset to run this type of business.
If you decide to offer banner ad design services, knowledge of graphic
design would benefit your business by eliminating the costs associated with
outsourcing to a graphic designer.

COST TO START THIS BUSINESS
You will have to pay for the development, design, and hosting of your Web
site. Computer hardware and software will be the main start-up expense.
You will need a software program that delivers the appropriate ads to the
sites in your network every time it has a visitor. The software should also be
able to provide reports of results for your clients. Estimated cost is a minimum
of $3,000 to $10,000 to start. Some of the sophisticated software, if
your clients want extremely targeted banner ad placement, could run you
over $100,000.
NUMBER OF EMPLOYEES NEEDED TO START
The minimum number of employees needed to start and run this type of business
is one dedicated individual.
INTERNATIONAL POTENTIAL
This business has strong international potential. Online advertising is an important
part of the marketing strategy for many businesses, in all countries.
E-BUSINESS MODEL/PAYMENT PROCESSING METHOD
As the advertising campaign needs to be developed with the client and decisions
must be made about where and when the ads will be appropriately placed,
e-business level 1 or 2 would be appropriate for this type of business.
IMPORTANT BUSINESS ISSUES TO BE ADDRESSED
The software you develop or purchase to administer the ad network should
be researched and be suitable to your level of operation. You should be
available by phone for prospective and current clients to contact you. You
should plan what you are going to do with the excess capacity ad space?for
example, you may want to offer last-minute volume discounts. Concentrate
on associating yourself and including in your network those Web sites that
have sustained high traffic levels. Always get paid up front for an advertising
campaign.
You will need to address the sophistication levels you want to get into with
the site advertising. Are you offering static ads, or are you going to provide
keyword advertising, geo-targeted advertising, behavioral advertising, and the
like? The level of sophistication will impact the software and the cost of that
software.

ONLINE MARKETING TECHNIQUES
? Developing a comprehensive affiliate/associate program would not only
increase the awareness of your ad network, it would also send referral
business to your site.
? Get linked from online advertising directories.
? Develop a sponsored listings campaign to bid on appropriate keyword
phrases with the popular search engines.
? Participate in newsgroups and discussion forums related to online advertising
or the industries that your ad network targets.
? Launch your own strategic banner advertising campaign on Web sites
frequented by your target market.

ADDITIONAL INCOME
You could generate additional income for your ad network by providing graphic
design services to businesses. You could design banner advertisements for businesses
that are not capable of handling this task in-house. This additional service
would add value to your online business.
ONLINE EXAMPLES
AdForce
http://www.adforce.com
AdForce is an independent centralized ad servicing and management solution
on the Web. Focusing on pay-per-click marketing, they offer expertise in the
management of online advertising.
.Com Marketing
http://www.commarketing.com
Having managed thousands of online operations, .Com Marketing?s strength
has focused on maximizing online media placements. .Com Marketing assesses

each component of our clients? campaigns prior to, during, and post-launch.
Consideration to detail is what sets .Com Marketing ahead of the rest.

2. Apartment Locator
OVERVIEW OF BUSINESS MODEL
Moving to a new city is never easy. Everyone needs a place to live, but not
everybody has the time to look. This is a problem that is being solved by many
businesses in major cities across the world. Many savvy individuals are launching
their own apartment locator Web sites and are turning quite a profit from
doing so.
Your main source of income will be referral fees from rental offices of apartments,
condominiums, and other real estate structures. You could also charge a
fee for sublets, apartment sharing, and private rental listings. Requests are sent
via e-mail from those seeking an apartment to you, the site administrator, with
a description of the desired apartment location, size, necessities, and so on, that
the individual is looking for. You then take the request and find the best possible
location to suit the person?s needs. Once you have found a match, you set
up a time for your client to view the apartment. You collect a referral fee if the
client signs a lease.
Another way to run this type of business would be to set up a searchable
database. Those with apartments to rent or sublet would pay a fee to add their
listing. People looking for an apartment would search based on specific criteria
such as location, maximum rent, number of bedrooms, etc.
SKILLS NEEDED
This business is great for someone with a thorough grasp of the available living
space in the local area and basic Web publishing skills. You should be a clear
communicator via e-mail and phone with your clients and the owners of rental
buildings so they take you seriously.
COST TO START THIS BUSINESS
Costs associated with starting this business range from $1,000 to $5,000. Initially
you will have to pay to design and develop your Web site along with all
costs associated with this (e.g., hosting service). If you want to develop the database,
there will be additional costs involved?the amount will be determined by
the level of sophistication, the number of fields, and the number of searchable

fields. Additional costs associated with opening this business include online advertising
costs and any offline promotion that you may implement.
NUMBER OF EMPLOYEES NEEDED TO START
Typically this business can be run by one individual to start and will increase
depending on the volume of referrals.
INTERNATIONAL POTENTIAL
Although people from other countries may use this service if they are moving to
the country, city, or state that you represent, this business generally has national
and regional potential.
E-BUSINESS MODEL/PAYMENT PROCESSING METHOD
E-business level 1 or 2 would be most appropriate for this type of business?level
1 if you are providing hands-on services and level 2 if you want to go the database
route and have the site run itself. For more information, see Part 1.
IMPORTANT BUSINESS ISSUES TO BE ADDRESSED
Although you want to receive as many referrals as possible, it is important not
to let the apartments that you represent take advantage of your site as a free
advertising opportunity. To avoid this problem, don?t list the specific names or
addresses of the apartment complexes that you represent. You can provide pictures,
and general location information. If you give the specific address of the
suggested match, your client may go directly to the apartment without even
using your service. Of course, if you run this Web site as a database, this will
not be an issue as you will be paid up front for all listings.
Collection of referral fees is an important issue. Ensure that you have contracts
in place with the apartment owners and safeguard procedures that help
you to keep your incoming fees organized.
Your Web site has to be constantly updated and maintained. When an apartment
is rented through you, make sure to show this on your site. When an
apartment is no longer available, remove it immediately from your site.
ONLINE MARKETING TECHNIQUES
? Develop links from as many Web sites and meta-indexes as possible
that target your geographic audiences.
? Purchase banner ads on geographically targeted Web sites (e.g., if you
represent apartments in New York, purchase a banner ad on a Web site
about living in New York).

? Participate in sponsored listings with the search engines by bidding on
appropriate keyword phrases.
? List your site in the classified ad section of nearby online newspapers.
? Participate in real estate or geographically specific mailing lists with a
cleverly designed signature file.

ADDITIONAL INCOME
You should consider partnering with businesses that could benefit from your
referrals. For example, local moving companies or furniture rental businesses
could benefit from your referrals, since you target the same market. This could
prove to be quite profitable for your business. An alternative to this would be
selling advertising to these businesses on your site.

3. Art Supply Store
OVERVIEW OF BUSINESS MODEL
Today everyone is buying products and services online, even artists. The number
of potential customers for an art supply store is tremendous. Many artists
frequent the Internet to buy supplies such as paint, canvas, brushes, carving
tools, and more. The Internet makes it easy for artists to buy products, especially
uncommon supplies that are not carried by your local art supply store.

Offering uncommon supplies also enables you to practice niche marketing and
can produce high returns for your business.
Here?s how it works. With the click of a button artists can easily browse
through your selection of art products, adding what they like to their shopping
cart. When they are finished they can simply check out, pay for the products
online with a credit card, and wait to receive the products in the mail. It?s as
easy as that.
SKILLS NEEDED
Knowledge of different art supplies and techniques is an asset, as you want to
provide the best customer service to your clients. You can?t do that without
understanding their needs.
COST TO START THIS BUSINESS
The cost to set up and run this type of business ranges from $2,500 to $5,000.
Initially you will have to pay for the design, development, and hosting of your
Web site along with your storefront solution and merchant account setup. All
additional costs are associated with promoting your business online and offline,
and purchasing and holding inventory.
NUMBER OF EMPLOYEES NEEDED TO START
To start this operation all you will need is one person. This operation is ideal if
you are looking to start a business part-time.
INTERNATIONAL POTENTIAL
This online business has strong international potential, as its products are of
interest to artists around the globe.
E-BUSINESS MODEL/PAYMENT PROCESSING METHOD
E-business level 3 is most appropriate for this type of business.
IMPORTANT BUSINESS ISSUES TO BE ADDRESSED
The site must be kept current. When items are discontinued or out of stock, the
Web site and storefront should be updated. The shipping operation of your
business should be timely. The prices have to be competitive with the same
products available off the Web. Keep in mind that shipping and handling charges
have to be added for products bought in your online store.

ONLINE MARKETING TECHNIQUES
? Develop as many links as possible from art-related Web sites and directories.
? Participate in newsgroups and discussion forums related to art with a
cleverly designed signature file.
? Host your own art advice column or daily art tips that will feature your
products and current promotions. You could leverage your exposure
through an RSS feed.
? Participate in sponsored listings by bidding on appropriate keywords
with the popular search engines.
? Develop a permission-based mailing list of potential customers and send
weekly e-specials or a newsletter with Art Tips and Resources.

ADDITIONAL INCOME
In addition to selling art supplies on your site, you could also help artists sell their
artwork. You could auction other artists? work from your site and then take a
percentage of the sale for your services. This would be a great way to earn additional
income and would also help to generate repeat traffic to your Web site.

e-business strategy to provide art supplies to consumers.

4. Association Management
OVERVIEW OF BUSINESS MODEL
The number of associations related to different industries and interests is phenomenal.
Many of these associations cannot afford to hire (or do not have the
volume to warrant hiring) one or more full-time employees to handle the dayto-
day administrative duties involved with running the association. Associations
are now outsourcing all of these administrative duties to an association
management firm.
Here?s how it works. The duties that associations want taken care of are
administrative. Common tasks include billing, bookkeeping, and accounting,
taking minutes at meetings, collection of annual dues, association event promotion,
Web site maintenance, and distribution of weekly or monthly newsletters.
Since these tasks will be repetitive and not very time-consuming, you are able to
handle the association management for multiple associations, and because the
tasks will remain similar between associations, you will be able to work much
more efficiently.
IslandBlue.com offers a wide range of art supplies from its site.

The key to success in this business is organization. Make sure that you are
always on time with your work. If you don?t keep yourself organized or you
take on too much work, you increase the chance that you might not perform up
to the associations? expectations of your firm. This could result in the termination
of a management contract and ultimately will affect the professionalism
and overall appeal of your organization?s services.
SKILLS NEEDED
Excellent organization and communication skills are necessary for starting this
type of business. Other skills that would be an asset include knowledge of accounting,
creative writing capabilities, and other basic administrative skills.
COST TO START THIS BUSINESS
Since you are providing a service that has no inventory, your initial costs will be
minimal. The cost to start this type of business ranges from $1,000 to $10,000.
This type of business typically can be run out of your home, which eliminates
overhead costs of setting up an office for your management firm.
NUMBER OF EMPLOYEES NEEDED TO START
One person can run this business part-time to begin. This is a perfect idea for
someone working from home.
INTERNATIONAL POTENTIAL
This business does not have strong international potential due to the nature of
the service provided. Common tasks include taking minutes at weekly or monthly
meetings or attending other functions held by the association. This will require
your business to be located in the surrounding area of the association, so this
business has a more regional appeal. Of course, if this is a national association,
most meetings may be online, with one or two a year being face-to-face with
everyone flying to a common location. If this is the case, the business could
have national or international appeal.
E-BUSINESS MODEL/PAYMENT PROCESSING METHOD
E-business level 1 is most appropriate for this type of business.
IMPORTANT BUSINESS ISSUES TO BE ADDRESSED
With all your clients, make sure to have a detailed contract that clearly outlines
all the services and duties you will be providing. The contract should indicate
important dates and contact lists, and someone within the association should

be appointed to provide you with all the necessary information and approvals
to run the association efficiently.
ONLINE MARKETING TECHNIQUES
? Participating in newsgroups and discussion forums related to your target
audience would be a great way to increase the traffic to your Web site.
? Launch a strategic banner advertising campaign on Web sites frequented
by your target market.
? Develop links from as many Web sites, directories, and meta-indexes
related to your target audience as possible.
? Participating in mail lists and discussion groups related to different industries
and associations with a cleverly designed signature file would
be a great way to generate awareness for your services.

ADDITIONAL INCOME
In addition to handling the daily administrative tasks for associations, you could
also provide your clients with promotional services. This would help to promote
the association?s membership benefits to prospective members and would
also increase the awareness of the association. Providing a newsletter circulated
to association members where you may feature paying advertisers is a chance
for additional income.
