Source: Ramirez positive test for testosterone

NEW YORK (AP) - A person familiar with the situation says the substance that caused Manny Ramirez to test positive for a banned substance last year was testosterone.

The administrator of baseball's drug program issued his annual report Friday. The document lists the substances that resulted in seven positive tests for performance-enhancing drugs that led to discipline.

Six players were suspended earlier this year for taking prohibited substances and, in each case, the substance that triggered the positive test was announced.

However, one positive test was unaccounted for and that came from Ramirez, a person familiar with the report told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because that detail wasn't in the report.

Ramirez at first retired in April 2011 rather than contest the test, then changed his mind that December - after the Independent Program Administrator's 2011 report. The test was then included in the 2012 figures.

MyHeritage buys Geni.com, raises $25 million in private funding round

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Family networking and genealogy website MyHeritage said it bought rival Geni.com as it continues to expand into the United States.

The Israeli company did not disclose how much it paid for Los Angeles-based Geni.com but said it was an eight-figure deal in a combination of cash and equity.

MyHeritage, which helps people delve into their ancestry and connect with long-lost relatives, is second in the sector behind market leader Ancestry.com, which agreed last month to be bought for $1.6 billion by a group led by Europe-based private equity firm Permira Advisors LLC

The acquisition is the first of the year for MyHeritage but eighth and largest since 2005. A year ago, it bought Utah-based FamilyLink.com.

MyHeritage also said it raised $25 million in a funding round led by Bessemer Venture Partners, while existing investors Index Ventures and Accel Partners also participated. The company has raised $49 million in total.

The funds will be used to boost growth of its historical content services and expand commercial operations worldwide. It said it will also enable MyHeritage, whose network has 72 million registered users, 1.5 billion profiles and 27 million family trees, to explore further mergers and acquisition opportunities.

Alleged kidnapper: I 'didn't mean' to kill baby, grandma

By Deanna Durante and David Chang, NBCPhiladelphia.com

PHILADELPHIA --?The man charged in the murder of a baby and her grandmother during a botched kidnapping and ransom scheme?claimed that he killed both victims by accident, according to video released during his court appearance Wednesday.

Raghunandan Yandamuri, 26, is accused of murdering 10-month-old Saanvi Venna and her grandmother, Satyavathi Venna, 61, last month. It happened on Oct. 22, at an apartment complex in Upper Merion where both the Venna family and Yandamuri, a family friend, lived.

Police believe Yandamuri went to the apartment with the intention of kidnapping Saanvi and holding her for ransom. But police say Satyavathi, who was babysitting the child, fought for her granddaughter and was fatally stabbed by Yandamuri.

On Oct. 26, the baby's body was found in the basement of the apartment building and Yandamuri was arrested. Police say they also found a ransom note from Yandamuri demanding $50,000.

'Didn't mean to kill anyone'
On Wednesday, Yandamuri appeared in court for a preliminary hearing. During the hearing, a 23-minute video confession was played for the court, according to NBC10's Deanna Durante.

In the video, Yandamuri told police he "accidentally" slit Satyavathi Venna's throat and that he "didn't mean to kill anyone." The video also showed him confessing to stuffing a handkerchief in the baby's mouth and wrapping a towel around her head when she wouldn't stop crying.

More news from NBCPhiladelphia.com

Yandamuri said in the video that he put the baby in a suitcase, escaped via a fire escape and sneaked into the basement of another apartment building.

Yandamuri also told police that when he took Saanvi out of the suitcase the towel was still wrapped around her face and she was unconscious. He said he removed the towel and handkerchief, splashed water on her and left her in the basement while he returned home, took a shower and went to work.

He also told police he went back to the basement around 3:30 p.m. with a bottle of milk for the girl but that she was already dead.

Yandamuri's defense attorney argued in court that since his client did not mean to kill anyone, first-degree murder should be taken off the table. Prosecutors disagreed, citing Yandamuri's ransom note as evidence against the attorney's claim.

According to prosecutors, 10 copies of the ransom note were left in the apartment of the Venna family with several references that if they didn't bring $50,000 by 8 p.m. that night that the baby would be killed. Prosecutors say that showed there was intention and premeditation for murder. The judge agreed with the prosecutors and ordered that Yandamuri stand trial on charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping, robbery, theft and abuse of corpse. ??

Obama says debt-cutting deal can be reached soon - Wed, 28 Nov 2012 PST

November 28, 2012 in Nation/World

Jim Kuhnhenn Associated Press

'); $("#content-tool-box-"+tool_name).jqm({trigger:this,overlay:20}); } }); });

?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama said Wednesday he believes that members of both parties can reach a ?framework? on a debt-cutting deal before Christmas, making his case with a mix of optimism and pressure on congressional Republicans to keep tax rates from rising on the middle?class.

Obama, pushing ahead with his campaign to increase revenue by hiking taxes on wealthier Americans, was joined by about a dozen middle-class Americans at a White House event in the midst of negotiation on how to avoid a so-called fiscal cliff at year?s end when across-the-board tax hikes and steep spending cuts kick?in.

?I am ready and able and willing and excited to go ahead and get this issue resolved in bipartisan fashion so that American families, American businesses have some certainty going into next year,? Obama?said.

He took special note of reports that some Republicans have expressed a willingness to extend the current expiring tax rates for households earning less than $250,000. Conservative Oklahoma GOP Rep. Tom Cole told GOP colleagues in a private meeting on Tuesday that it?s better to extend tax cuts for 98 percent of taxpayers than engage in a prolonged fight that risks increasing taxes on everyone. Cole is a longtime GOP loyalist and a confidant of House Speaker John Boehner,?R-Ohio.

?I?m glad to see, if you?ve been reading the papers lately, that more and more Republicans in Congress seem to be agreeing with this idea that we should have a balanced approach,? Obama said, noting that the Senate has already passed legislation to extend current rates to those middle class?taxpayers.

?The Democrats in the House are ready to vote for that same bill today,? he said. ?If we can get a few House Republicans to agree as well, I?ll sign this bill as soon as Congress sends it my way. I?ve got to repeat: I?ve got a pen. I?m ready to sign?it.?

He made an appeal to the public to pressure Congress, arguing that similar efforts late last year to extend a payroll tax cut resulted in congressional?passage.

?When the American people speak loudly enough, lo and behold, Congress listens,? he?said.

While expressing confidence that he and Congress could strike a bargain for a ?framework in the coming?weeks,?

Obama says we need to ?approach this problem with the middle-class in?mind.?

The president is urging the public to pressure Congress through social media, pointing to (hashtag)My2K on Twitter ? a reference to the estimated $2,200 tax increase a typical middle-class family of four would see if the Bush tax cuts?expire.

The president is also meeting with corporate executives at the White House on Wednesday and then traveling to Pennsylvania on Friday to push for upper income bracket earners to pay higher tax rates. It?s part of a campaign to pressure Republicans in Congress to support raising taxes on the?wealthy.

US-Russian crew chosen for yearlong space voyage

American astronaut Scott Kelly and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko will launch on the one-year space station flight in spring 2015 and return to Earth in spring 2016.

American astronaut Scott Kelly and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko will launch on the?one-year space station flight?in spring 2015 and return to Earth in spring 2016, NASA officials announced today (Nov. 26). They will begin their mission training in early 2013.

The mission will help NASA understand how the human body adapts to extremely long space missions, such as voyages around the moon, to an asteroid and ultimately to Mars, NASA officials said.

"Congratulations to Scott and Mikhail on their selection for this important mission," William Gerstenmaier, NASA's associate administrator for Human Exploration and Operations in Washington, said in a statement. "Their skills and previous experience aboard the space station align with the mission's requirements. The one-year increment will expand the bounds of how we live and work in space and will increase our knowledge regarding the effects of microgravity on humans as we prepare for future missions beyond low-Earth orbit." [Most Extreme Human Spaceflight Records]?

NASA is developing spacecraft and mission plans to send astronauts to visit a near-Earth asteroid by 2025, a goal set by President Barack Obama. The space agency is also reportedly studying potential?manned missions back to the moon.

Kelly, 48, is a U.S. Navy captain who has flown on two space shuttle missions and one long-duration expedition on the International Space Station. He commanded the space station's Expedition 26 mission in 2010 during his third spaceflight.

Kelly hails from West Orange, N.J., and joined NASA's astronaut corps in 1996. His identical twin brother Mark Kelly also served as a Navy captain and NASA astronaut before retiring from the military and spaceflight in 2011.

Kornienko, 52, is also a veteran spaceflyer. The native of Syzran in Russia's Kuibyshev region is a former paratrooper officer who joined Russia's cosmonaut corps in 1998. Kornienko spent more than 176 days in space as a flight engineer on the station's Expedition 23 and 24 crews.

NASA and Russia announced plans for the one-year space station voyage earlier this year.?Rumors of the flight?were circling prior to the announcement, with the Russian news agency Interfax suggesting that veteran NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson ?a veteran station commander ?as a potential choice for the American crewmember. Whitson stepped down from her position as NASA's Chief Astronaut earlier this year to rejoin the agency's active spaceflying ranks.

Today's announcement, however, puts that theory to rest.

"Selection of the candidate for the one year mission was thorough and difficult due to the number of suitable candidates from the Cosmonaut? corps," Vladimir Popovkin, the head of Russian Federal Space Agency, said in a statement. "We have chosen the most responsible, skilled and enthusiastic crew members to expand space exploration, and we have full confidence in them."

The 2015 space station flight by Kelly and Kornienko will be the longest mission to the?International Space Station, but not the longest continuous spaceflight. That record is held by cosmonaut Valery Polyakov, who lived aboard Russia's Mir space station from January 1994 until March 1995, ultimately spending 438 consecutive days in orbit.

The International Space Station is the product of cooperation by NASA, Russia and the space agencies of Europe, Japan and Canada. Construction of the $100 billion space station began in 1998 with the first crew taking up residence in 2000. Astronauts and cosmonauts have lived on the space station in rotating crews ever since.

The Web Is A Great Place To Discover More About Home Businesses

Achieving success at a home-based business is not everyone?s fortune, but don?t let that prevent you from giving it a try. At this time you simply need a computer to create, for a really low cost, a business that you can manage from home. It won?t take much at all. You need a small dose of determination to do the research, and a high-speed, low-cost internet access. A computer-based business has a global reach with unlimited consumers, whereas a traditional business is confined to local custom and has pricey set-up expenses. Everyone in the world with internet access is a potential client.

Click here if you?d like more information.

There are many ways to get your toes wet if you?re really considering a business on the Internet. To make a start you certainly don?t need to be an IT nerd, but being familiar with using a laptop or computer would be useful. Quite often, generating an income online has nothing to do with your technical skills, but with how much you know about the things you like doing. A good example of a web business for folks who are very good at writing would be doing copy writing. Content is often in demand, so a writer could also work on a freelance basis, obtaining writing jobs from individuals who are no good at it. All you need to do is look for those individuals who have a need, such as content, and supply it for them. Write down a few samples of your work and then do a bit of promoting, and you will be in business.

Online auction web sites are another avenue from which a large number of people are making good money. You can acquire items at wholesale value and sell them at full price, or you may already have products suitable for selling online. Getting your product offers looked at by customers is taken care of for you by places like eBay and other online auction sites. Your job is firstly to figure out a price and list your product, then wait for the sales. Once the buyer makes the purchase, you will receive the payment and then complete the purchase by sending the purchaser their merchandise.

Life is getting a lot easier in lots of ways through the advances in technology. The advent of the pc has put ownership of a business within the reach of ordinary folks. The Internet has everything you need to start a business. It offers access to products you can sell as well as information that shows you how to do it. If you could identify a business model that appeals to you and apply it to your own start-up business, that would be great.

Instead of a fulltime business you could just be after another income stream, which the Internet caters for handsomely. Spend a little time on your computer seeking information on starting an online business, and you will find lots of it. Get started on your research and you could soon begin making some cash.

Google's Play Store website now links reviews to your Google+ account

Google's Play Store website now links reviews with your Google+ account

YouTube asks nicely if you would like to post comments using your Google+ name, and now a similar change has quietly made it to the Play Store. When we say similar, we mean in this case, you're forced into revealing your true identity from now on -- at least when you're accessing Google's virtual marketplace from a browser. We'd guess that linking ratings and reviews to your account ties in with the enhanced Google+ integration recently added to the app, and will serve to provide better download recommendations based on your profile and friends. The requirement, however, has not yet been implemented in the app, so if you've been meaning to leave a few damning reviews, this loophole is your last chance to do so anonymously.

'Teen Mom' Farrah rips Jenelle: She's not smart

By Rebecca Macatee, E! Online

MTV

Jenelle Evans and Farrah Abraham of "Teen Mom 2" and "Teen Mom."

So dramatic! "Teen Mom's" Farrah Abraham and Jenelle Evans have a feud brewing. After Jenelle slammed her fellow MTV reality star for her plastic-surgery procedures (including her recent nose job and chin implant ), Farrah has fired back.?

More form E: Check out Farrah's brand-new face

It all started last week, when Jenelle wrote on Sulia, "Only 21 years old and went under 3 plastic surgeries already?!" -- an apparent jab at Farrah. "That's insane if you ask me!"?

(If you'll recall, Jenelle got her breasts enhanced earlier this year; she told a follower on Twitter that, "Hell no I wouldn't do any other kind of form of plastic surgery forever.")?

But Farrah hadn't forgotten about Jenelle's trip under the knife. When asked what she thought about her former friend's comments, Farrah didn't hold back.?

More from E: Jenelle engaged to Courtland Rogers?

"Oh really?! Because she got a boob job after I did!" she told Rumor Fix.?

"There are lots of teen mothers on MTV who are very not intelligent. And I'm one ('Teen Mom' cast member) who really works hard, who really educated myself and really cares about people," she said.?

More from E: Here are Farrah's modeling pics!?

"And lots of the time they call me a b---- and then act like my friend, but that's normal because I think that's what the world has become. But (the drama) is just not in my life."?

We say, to each her own!?

Daniel Warwick: College? YES! effort is worthy endeavor

SPRINGFIELD - I recently sat immersed in work at my computer when, out of the corner of my eye, I caught a glimpse of a large manila envelope that a member of my cabinet had left on my desk for me. A teacher had sent it inter-office mail to her. Affixed to the envelope was a note that simply said: "Thought you might enjoy these!"

Inside was a packet of drawings created by a kindergarten class at Beal School. Each drawing was a letter to the student's parents, asking their parents for help in making sure that they would get to go to college when they graduated high school.

Several of the kindergarteners promised to "be good" in college. Some asked their folks to "help them get money" to go to college. A few said they wanted to read big books in college or play college sports.

Others explained that they simply had to go to college because they wanted to be a doctor or lawyer. One child said he wanted to go to college so that he could become president of the United States.

Just two weeks before opening that envelope, I had stood on the front steps of City Hall flanked by hundreds of school children, college presidents, pastors, priests and rabbis, educators, legislators, business owners, community leaders, college mascots, reporters and news crews, community-based organizations, concerned citizens, parents and many other caring adults. We had gathered in support of a city-wide initiative called College?YES!, which was aimed at inspiring and supporting college goals for our students and their families.

The package of kindergarten letters that I unexpectedly received on my desk recently is further proof of what I already knew: that the College?YES! initiative was a worthwhile endeavor with unprecedented participation and success.

Those of us who work in the Springfield Public Schools are lucky enough to see the fruits of that initiative every day. But for many of the businesses and organizations that participated, the weekend-long event may seem to have been just that - just a weekend activity, which existed in a vacuum.

Let the letters that landed on my desk re-assure you of the substantial impact your efforts have made on so many of our students. As a city, we have collectively begun to root college aspirations in the minds of even our youngest students. The children who wrote these letters to their parents, for example, will enter first-grade, sixth-grade, ninth-grade, and become high-school seniors believing that college is a viable, reasonable next step post high school graduation.

Be assured that our schools have built a great deal of college aspiration momentum. Robust conversations continue. Special assemblies highlight career options. The college message is plastered throughout many hallways, classrooms and bulletin boards.
We continue to expand our capacities and we are racing to meet self-imposed improvement goals because we are committed to creating a district where all students graduate college and are career ready.

And we thank the Springfield community for sharing in that commitment.

Hundreds Of Small Businesses Are Fighting ... - Business Insider

The issue of urban development is never easy. Incorporating old communities into new ones is always fraught with controversy, especially in New York City.

The area of Willets Point in Queens has long been a target for re-development.

In December of 2011, Mayor Bloomberg finally broke ground on a plan to create a shopping mall, convention center, hotel and affordable housing in the area. Though the plan has run into various legal obstacles since then, businesses in the area have begun receiving letters ordering them to vacate their property by February of 2013.

While the city says will the plan will create hundreds of new jobs and spur economic growth in the area, for many who work and own businesses there, the mayor's plan is simply a recipe for their demise.

Watch the video below to see why.

11 skinned puppies found in bag in Pennsylvania

By Reuters

Animal welfare investigators on Monday sought clues in the skinning of 11 puppies whose bodies were found stuffed in a bag left in a ditch in eastern Pennsylvania.

The gruesome discovery was made on Friday in Lower Macungie, about 20 miles from Lynn Township, where days earlier another animal carcass was found skinned and cooked, with its feet cut off, said Bruce Fritch, board president of the Lehigh County Humane Society, which is investigating the slayings.

"It's just heinous," Fritch said.

A black plastic sack containing the skinless puppy bodies was found by a woman walking her dog near a park in Lower Macungie.

The puppies appeared to be no more than 2 weeks old and the only hair left on their bodies was on the paws, although it was such a small amount that investigators were unable to determine the color, Fritch said.

The bodies were taken to a veterinary hospital, where experts attempted to determine the cause of death, he said.

"It's terrible," Fritch said. "Hopefully, somebody saw something and will come forward."

Investigators were conducting DNA tests to determine whether the animal found in Lynn was a dog, a coyote or another animal.

Debate Over Security Measures In Royal Oak ? CBS Detroit

Gated business in Royal Oak. (Judy Davis)

Gated business in Royal Oak. (Judy Davis)

ROYAL OAK (WWJ) ? A debate is heating up in downtown Royal Oak over whether businesses should be allowed to use rolling gates over doors and windows for security purposes.

A jewelry shop and deli recently installed the gates, but city officials are trying to have them removed.

Royal Oak Commissioner David Poulton is one of the people opposed to the security measure.

?Downtown Royal Oak is a?walk-able?community,? said Poulton. ?We have concerns about these security curtains and the image they send, to me, it sends that it?s a high crime district and that is not what it is.?

Poulton is part of a city-led effort to pass an ordinance that would ban the rolling curtains.

Infinity Jewelers and Franklin Deli, the companies that put them up, could not be reached for comment.

Mursi opponents rally in Cairo's Tahrir Square

CAIRO (Reuters) - Opponents of President Mohamed Mursi rallied in Cairo's Tahrir Square for a fifth day on Tuesday, stepping up calls to scrap a decree they say threatens Egypt with a new era of autocracy.

The protest called by leftist, liberal and socialist groups marks an escalation of the worst crisis since the Muslim Brotherhood politician was elected in June and exposes the deep divide between newly empowered Islamists and their opponents.

The crowd is expected to grow in the late afternoon but hundreds were already in the square after many camped overnight. Police fired tear gas and organizers urged demonstrators not to clash with Interior Ministry security forces.

One person - a Muslim Brotherhood activist - has been killed and hundreds more injured in violence set off by a move that has also triggered a rebellion by judges and battered confidence in an economy struggling to recover from two years of turmoil.

Mursi's opponents have accused him of behaving like a modern-day pharaoh. The United States, a big benefactor to Egypt's military, has voiced its concerns, worried by more turbulence in a country that has a peace treaty with Israel.

The protest will test the extent to which Egypt's non-Islamist opposition can rally support. The Islamists have consistently beaten more secular parties at the ballot box in elections held since Hosni Mubarak was toppled in February, 2011.

"We don't want a dictatorship again. The Mubarak regime was a dictatorship. We had a revolution to have justice and freedom," said Ahmed Husseini, 32, who was speaking early on Tuesday in Tahrir Square.

Activists have been camped out in Tahrir Square, scene of the historic uprising against Mubarak, since Friday, blocking it to traffic and clashing intermittently with riot police in nearby streets.

The decree issued by Mursi on Thursday expanded his powers and protected his decisions from judicial review until the election of a new parliament expected in the first half of 2013.

The New York-based Human Rights Watch said it gives Mursi more power than the military junta from which he assumed power.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon noted judges had challenged the decree in remarks to Austria's Die Presse, adding: "But I have also noted that Mursi wants to resolve the problem in a dialogue. I will encourage him to continue to do so."

AVOIDING CONFRONTATION

In a bid to ease tensions with judges outraged at the step, Mursi has assured the country's highest judicial authority that elements of the decree giving his decisions immunity would apply only to matters of "sovereign" importance. Though that should limit it to issues such as a declaration of war, experts said there was room for a broader interpretation.

In another step to avoid more confrontation, the Muslim Brotherhood cancelled a mass protest it had called in Cairo for Tuesday in support of a decree that has also won the backing of more hardline Islamist groups.

But there has been no retreat on other elements of the decree, including a stipulation that the Islamist-dominated body writing a new constitution be protected from legal challenge.

Its popular legitimacy undermined by the withdrawal of most of its non-Islamist members, the assembly faces a raft of court cases from plaintiffs who claim it was formed illegally.

The new system of government to be laid out in the constitution is one of the issues at the heart of the crisis.

"The president of the republic must put his delusions to one side and undertake the only step capable of defusing the crisis: cancelling the despotic declaration," liberal commentator and activist Amr Hamzawy wrote in his column in al-Watan newspaper.

"We asked for the cancellation of the decree and that did not happen," said Mona Amer, spokeswoman for the opposition movement Popular Current, part of a coalition of parties that are joining forces to challenge the Mursi decree.

Mursi issued the decree a day after his administration won international praise for brokering an end to eight days of violence between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

The decree was seen as targeting in part a legal establishment still largely unreformed from Mubarak's era, when the Brotherhood was outlawed.

MEETING HALF WAY

Rulings from an array of courts this year have dealt a series of blows to the Brotherhood, leading to the dissolution of the first constitutional assembly and the parliament elected a year ago. The Brotherhood had a major say in both.

The judiciary blocked an attempt by Mursi to reconvene the Brotherhood-led parliament after his election victory. It also stood in the way of his attempt to sack the prosecutor general, a Mubarak hold over, in October.

In his decree, Mursi gave himself the power to sack that prosecutor and appoint a new one. In open defiance of Mursi, some judges are refusing to acknowledge that step.

But in a sign that other judges were willing to meet Mursi half way, the Supreme Judicial Council, the nation's highest judicial body, proposed Mursi limit the scope of decisions that would be immune from judicial review to "sovereign matters", language the presidential spokesman said Mursi backed.

"The president said he had the utmost respect for the judicial authority and its members," spokesman Yasser Ali told reporters in announcing the agreement on Monday.

Mursi's administration has defended his decree as an effort to speed up reforms and complete a democratic transformation. Leftists, liberals, socialists and others say it has exposed the autocratic impulses of a man once jailed by Mubarak.

Before the president's announcement, leftist politician Hamdeen Sabahy said protests would continue until the decree was scrapped and said Tahrir would be a model of an "Egypt that will not accept a new dictator because it brought down the old one".

Mursi has repeatedly stated the decree will only stay in place until a new parliament is elected - something that can only happen once the constitution is written and passed in a popular referendum.

Though both Islamists and their opponents broadly agree that the judiciary needs reform, his rivals oppose Mursi's methods.

Spybot - Search & Destroy 2.0

Twelve years ago "spyware" wasn't in most people's vocabulary, so early antispyware products like Ad-Aware and Spybot had to work on education. It's not entirely clear which of them had the first full-scale antispyware?even Spybot's creator isn't sure. But Spybot was definitely one of the first. Spybot - Search & Destroy 2.0 is the first update in a long, long time. It's now billed as a full antivirus that promises to destroy "spyware, malware, adware and other malicious software." It does no such thing.

Spybot is free for non-commercial use, though the company solicits donations. The $13.99 Home edition adds scheduled scan and a couple other features, and eliminates the nag screens. For $24.99 you get the Professional edition which, among other things, gets you access to the protected repair environment and the ability to create rescue CDs. The core antivirus protection is the same.

Some earlier editions of the product included the oddly-named TeaTimer module for realtime protection against new malware attacks. The current edition is strictly a cleanup tool.

Spybot's main window includes icons for common tasks like checking for updates, launching a scan, and checking files in quarantine. It even has an icon to donate money to the designers. Checking a box for Advanced User Mode reveals almost a dozen more icons, though not all of them are functional in the free edition.

Easy Installation
I had no trouble installing Spybot on my twelve malware-infested test systems. Avira Antivirus Free 2013, AhnLab V3 Click, and several others had difficulty with installation on a system that will only boot in Safe Mode. V3 Click actually wouldn't install at all. Spybot sailed through that installation just as it did the other eleven.

I frequently encounter problems after a scan due to over-zealous deletion of system files. F-Secure and VIPRE Antivirus 2013 needed tons of tech support work to restore damaged test systems. Spybot didn't do any damage, but that's because it didn't do much of anything.

Dismal Malware Removal
I ran an initial update on each test system. Wow, the Spybot updater is loaded with unnecessary detail, including the precise version of every component file. Once the update completed, I launched a full system scan. Spybot offers to clean up temporary files before starting a scan; I accepted its offer.

My impression of a typical virus scan is that the antivirus looks at each file and checks whether it matches a signature, or a behavior pattern, or a heuristic signature. Judging from its progress display, Spybot instead goes through its list of known malware and checks whether each is present. I noticed some venerable names like Aureate and Virtumonde in the display.

On completion, Spybot displays everything it found. This includes various types of malware, but also includes insecure system settings, tracking cookies, recently-used file lists, and other distractions. It looks like a lot, but in fact on two of my test systems Spybot missed all three of the installed malware samples.

At the end of each scan, a window pops up explaining what to do "if you suspect that Spybot might not have detected some issues that other scanners have detected." It offers to disable third party cookies (for whatever good that would do) or submit files for analysis.

Spybot detected just 32 percent of my current malware samples, knocking Anvi Smart Defender (which got 60 percent) out of last place. It did a terrible job removing the few samples it did find. Fully half of those were still running after Spybot's supposed cleanup. Spybot's overall score of 1.5 points is also a new low.

mortgage financing. ?Home buyers seem to forget that every little thing on their credit can be the make or break item in getting a mortgage or not. ?So one might ask where are all the cash RI home buyers I have heard about in the media?

Well cash rich home buyers are out in force on waterfront RI real estate. ?In fact the statistics in the southern RI communities home sales in 2012 validate that a high percentage of homes being purchased are with cash. ?Cash from IRAs, ?other investments, stock market and sometimes Mom and Dad?s deep pockets.

It just glides through. ?Where are the bounces and bumps to be anticipated? ?Well mostly in the home inspection process where the cash RI home buyer may demand more of the home repairs as part of the negotiated final home price.

Most real estate agents will glow at receiving a good cash offer at a home market price to present to their seller. ?In fact, some buyers will start the mortgage financing process and just stop! ?They throw their hands up when they have the cash and purchase a home all cash. ?It is the most desirable way of home purchase. ?Yes, CASH is king in home buys!

Buyers who do have enough equity in their home can down size from a current property to buy a smaller home to fit their future needs easier.

This is the time to talk with a knowledgeable RI real estate agent that can make the process go smoother. ?Have time to chat about your current home or the one you have been thinking about? ?I would love the opportunity to help you so call me at 401.529.7849 or email me at RiByTheBay@gmail.com today. ?Cash RI Home Buyers Wanted!

Pets and Multiple Sclerosis - Multiple Sclerosis Blog

I don?t know how you might personify words like love, companion, pal, loyal, faithful, dear, steadfast ? for me they can be summed up in one word: Sadie. Her full name is Newkadera Sadie Peg O? My Heart, and she?s a soft-coated Irish wheaten terrier.

Today, after one last visit to the vet and a long drive to the USDA office for their endorsement on her travel paperwork, Sadie will be ready to travel and I will be ready to fulfill a promise I made to her ? nearly seven years ago ? to take her home.

I?ve never fully trained Sadie as a service dog, but she has been of service to me since before I got the lass. The photos that zipped their way to my computer screen ? thousands of miles away from her home of birth ? filled me with anticipation and joy. The hours we spend on the floor when it?s easier for me to simply stay down rather than rise only to fall again have offered diversion and fun. The long (and more often, short) walks on my good days have left me feeling alive and a part of the real world outside of my bubble.

Service animal or not, pets can mean so much to someone living with a chronic illness. Both physiologically and psychologically, having time with a pet is proven to reduce blood pressure, relieve stress and even prolong life. They are so much more than merely pets to us.

I could fill volumes (and have already written magazine articles and filled pages of a book) with stories about Sadie. But the Life with MS Blog isn?t ?The Trevis Show.? It?s a community of people gathered around a cyber-fire and sharing bits of ourselves and our lives.

I offer, rather, a place for you to tell your stories of pets ? still with you or departed and fondly missed.

Many a sleepless night has been focused on getting Sadie home to Ireland safely. Irrational fears of what could go wrong have diverted my attention from the thousands of things that might actually go awry during this move. For that I am actually grateful, as the weight of all of those scenarios would have been crushing.

Off we go; into the wild, blue yonder tomorrow ? Sadie, Caryn and I ? to land in the fabled fields of 40 shades of green. She?s set to travel and so am I.

Wishing you and your family the best of health.

Cheers

Problems with Fish Oil Supplements | Men's Health News

There's something fishy going on with your supplement.

Fish oil faithfuls beware: Thirty-one percent of omega-3 supplements are mislabeled or have quality issues, according to recent tests by ConsumerLab.com.

When ConsumerLab tested 35 omega-3 supplements on the market, they found startling results. Four supplements contained 20 percent to 30 percent less omega-3s than the labels claimed, one product contained spoiled fish oil, and three products contained two to three times the claimed amounts of fatty acids. One incorrectly claimed to contain 1 milligram (mg) of fat, but actually contained 1,000 mg. (You can buy the full report here.)

If you do take a supplement, your best bet is Swanson EFA?s Super EPA, according to Tod Cooperman, M.D., President of ConsumerLab.com. It rated well in the study, and at just six cents a pill and packing 500 mg of omega-3s (most experts suggest 300 to 500 mg per day), it?s both safe and inexpensive. To know exactly which supplements you need to take every day, find out The Top 10 Supplements for Men.

Hack gives HTC Droid DNA the bootloader unlock that Verizon took away

HTC Droid DNA review wrap-up

Custom ROM fans were briefly teased with the prospect of Verizon loosening its anti-modding stance when the HTC Droid DNA first arrived: in the pre-release days, the official HTCDev portal allowed unlocking the DNA's bootloader. While the carrier unfortunately clamped down and denied the option by the time the giant smartphone was in stores, that hasn't stopped Android Police and Sean Beaupre from keeping the dream alive through very unofficial means. A special backup file, a carrier ID generator app, a shell script and judicious use of ADB tweak the carrier information to trick HTCDev and let the unlock work once again. To call this a risky procedure would be an understatement, however -- venturing past a certain point raises the real possibility of bricking the device, and HTC's bootloader tool already puts limits on post-unlock support even when it's blessed by carriers. Should the urge to liberate the Droid DNA overwhelm a sense of caution (or a wait for the Deluxe), you'll find both the hack and unofficial help through the source links.
