MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Tony Gibson has made his way through the hiring process and is now officially back on West Virginia's football coaching staff.
The school made the announcement today.
"Being a West Virginia native, I am happy to be back in my home state. West Virginia football means a lot to me and my family," Gibson said in the prepared release by the school. "I am looking forward to working with coach [Dana] Holgorsen and being reunited on the defensive side of the ball with coach [Keith] Patterson. I also look forward to being a part of the future of this program and advancing what I helped start years ago."
Gibson, a Boone County native who graduated from Van High School and Glenville State, was on Rich Rodriguez's staff at WVU from 2001 through 2007. He left with Rodriguez in December of 2007 when Rodriguez was named the coach at Michigan.
Gibson was with Rodriguez at Michigan for three years, coached at Pitt for a year (Patterson was the defensive coordinator there) and then was back with Rodriguez last season at Arizona.
Gibson coached the cornerbacks when he was at WVU the first time. He will coach the safeties this time. His most valuable asset, though, is perhaps as a recruiter, especially in talent-rich Western Pennsylvania.
"Tony certainly has built a reputation as an outstanding recruiter and is nationally known for his ability," Holgorsen said. "Being a native West Virginian and having already coached here at the university and successfully recruited western Pennsylvania for many years, he brings a familiarity that will be an asset to our program. He worked with Keith at Pitt two years ago, so he already is well-versed with his defensive philosophy so that should help make for a smooth transition."
When contacted Wednesday, Gibson had just wrapped up the paperwork on his hiring and was headed out to begin recruiting.
Gibson is one of three new coaches on Holgorsen's staff. Brian Mitchell, who was the defensive coordinator at East Carolina last season, has been hired to coach the cornerbacks. Another former WVU assistant, Lonnie Galloway, is still going through the hiring process and when that's completed will coach the wide receivers.
See Thursday's edition of The Charleston Gazette for an interview with Gibson.
