Intuit index: Texas shows greatest small business job growth in 2012 ...

Small business employment in Texas grew just below the national rate in December, but the state posted the most growth for all of 2012, according to data released today by Intuit Inc.

U.S. employers added 15,000 jobs in December, for a 0.09 percent growth rate, according to Intuit Payroll?s latest small business index. In Texas, small business employment grew at a rate of 0.07 percent last month.

South Carolina and Utah tied for the largest employment increase (+0.20 percent), and Michigan saw the biggest decrease (-0.20 percent) in December. Intuit doe not report job numbers by state.

For all of 2012, U.S. small business employment rose 0.12 percent as the nation added 24,000 jobs, according to Intuit. The national hiring rate has been slowly recovering since hitting bottom during the recession in 2009.

Texas led last year?s small business job growth, up 1.04 percent from 2011. Utah was No. 2 (+0.99 percent), followed by Arizona (+0.91 percent), Oklahoma (+0.90 percent) and California (+0.77 percent).

Intuit typically releases its employment data as a preview to the U.S. Labor Department?s monthly jobs report, which comes out Friday for December.

Intuit tracks employment trends for about 173,000 U.S. small businesses (those with fewer than 20 employees) that use Intuit Online Payroll and QuickBooks Online Payroll products.
