Theater Jones starts its review by Jan Farrington of Lyric Stage?s production of Too Many Girls as follows:
?You can?t help but love Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, the brilliant songwriting duo whose signature combination of lilting melodies and sharp-edged lyrics never gets old. But when those songs are found in a musical comedy of a certain age?however beautifully restored?what happens if a fair bit of the ?comedy? is showing its age?
That, in short, is the good and bad news about Lyric Stage?s energetic, authentic production of a newly restored Rodgers and Hart musical, 1939?s Too Many Girls, running through Sunday at the Irving Arts Center. In 2009, Lyric received a National Endowment for the Arts grant to ?support the preservation and production? of the musical. The Rodgers and Hammerstein organization went to tremendous trouble to piece together and restore the original Hans Spielak orchestrations and Hugh Martin vocal arrangements. So far, so good. But here?s the question: why not face the fact that (like the jokes in some Shakespeare plays) comedy has a shelf life? If the ?book? of a musical is long past its expiration date?why not put out something fresh?
That said, there is a lot to like about this production: lively cast, great throwback choreography by director Ann Nieman, a full (and marvelously ?live?) orchestra with music director Jay Dias in the pit. Lyric and its founding producer Steven Jones together are celebrating 20 years of great, groundbreaking work, and Too Many Girls should give fans of vintage musical comedies plenty to enjoy??
